Here is another one with two parts to it.
The well known road, the H2-2, is known as Voortrekker Pad/Road.
1) After what voortrekker (pioneer) was the road named?
2) As a child in the 1940's, I only knew the road as '...........................'. This name is recorded on old maps in my possession. :hmz:

Hi Ndloti, long time no contact. Sorry, but I can't make out the name on your map. It doesn't appear to be the same name as I am referring to though. Would be interested to see a full and slightly larger map that you have. Could you PM me a copy? It would be really appreciated. I have a map that I thought came out in the 1940's, that doesn't show Tshokwane picnic spot. Is yours really from 1934?

Hello Chip . I received the photos of the map from another forumite .
You can enlarge the picture , have you tried simultaneously depressing the Ctrl key while turning the scrolling switch on the mouse ?
The name of the road is Trichardt road .
It is perhaps better to email you full size pics - send me your email address .

Hi Ndloti, thanks for your offer. I have sent you my e-mail address by PM. You must excuse me but I am an "old toppie" when it comes to PCs and I didn't know that you could enlarge pics as you described. Thanks for the tip.
To all forumites excluding Ndloti, to whom I gave the answer, the road's name I am looking for is not the Trichardt Pad.

Duke Ellieton, I guess you have the same reference book as I do. You are nearly right though and so I will give the answer to you and you will be IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From the 1940's until I think the early 1950's, my family and I only knew the H2-2 as "The Jock of the Bushveld Road". The name was changed to "Voortrekker Pad/Road" when I was still in Primary school. We were disgusted to see a huge canvas banner stretched across the beginning of the road, just outside of Pretoriuskop Rest Camp, renaming it Voortrekker Pad/Road. J J Kloppers & Hans Bornman, in their book of place names in the Kruger Park, referred to an old name of "Jock Road", but I beg to differ. In Harry Wolhuter's book, 'Memories of a game ranger', first published in 1948, the inside cover has a map of the area and the road is marked "Jock of the Bushveld Road".

You are right regarding the second part of the question, namely that it was named after a Trichardt other than Louis. In fact it was named after CARL Trichardt, another Voortrekker who explored this route in the 1800's.

Go for it Duke

Olifants camp opened on 3 June 1960 but Chip will tell you one could stay in Olifants camp way back in the 1950's :hmz:

How is that possible?
