I agree. But it is so easy that there must be a trick.

If he is painting the numbers 1 to 100 on every door of each of 100 chalets then probably 11 x 100 (1100)! That is the sort of crazy logic usually found in riddles......

No trick here, I promise, ecojunkie :) No wordplay, no funny logic required.

Will try again then! 20 (Or only once if you ignore the double numbers 19, etc!).

EJ. And, thanks, Porridge, for the appointment. I wonder if someone else would have painted those numbers on the chalets if the number of nines might have varied. :hmz:

Here is another riddle, although more a fact of physics really:

A helium balloon is floating against, and hence touching, the inside of a car's ceiling. If no-one touches the balloon, and it is positioned in the middle of the car's ceiling, what happens to that balloon when the car accelerates sharply forwards? Does it move backwards, forwards, or remain where it is? (Assume that there is nothing to hold the balloon back, such as friction or static.)

Although I have made my name Krokodil many times, I will give it a go. My guess is that it will stay in the same place. The air inside the car moves with the car and because helium is lighter than air, the air inside will keep the balloon in place.

   So what now?? Are we allowed to call you that from time to time, affectionately of course.

The rest sounds like a pretty good explanation to me Rooies :)

Thanks for the explanation, Rooies. I'm interested to hear why you say the balloon will go forward, Philip; or is that just a guess?

@ RosemaryH You can call me anything, even Rooi Krokodil. 8) Just don't accuse me of not trying to figure out the riddles. :D

To be more exact. In relation to the vehicle, the balloon stays in place. Viewed from the outside, the balloon moves forward.

Clever answer, Rooies. I can see you're a thinker. Waiting for Philip's explanation too.
