Why are bats nocturnal?

Most bats are feeders of flying insects, but can seldom compete with diurnal birds for this food source, as the latter have occupied most of the niches in this regard. Therefore, to compete effectively, they prefer to hunt at night when most birds are inactive. Their developed sense of echolocation allows them to accurately locate and consume suitable prey.

I agree with OWN on this one. I imagine their eyesight would also have something to do with this, as far as I know their eyesight is not fantastic also very sensitive to light.

I would also think besides Owls, their are less predators flying about at night that could be a threat to them.

Also perhaps human electronic devices, which there may be less use of at night would cause less interference with their echolocation abilities?

Not all bats are nocturnal??? Fruit bats are not insect eaters? Yet they are nocturnal or crepuscular?

Nearly all bats are nocturnal (active at night) or crepuscular (active during the twilight of dawn and dusk). To get around in the dark, many nocturnal bats rely on a sophisticated form of sonar known as echolocation for navigating and finding prey. Many bats, especially the crepuscular ones, have exceptionally good eyesight designed for low levels of light. Only those bats that live on remote islands lacking birds of prey routinely fly during the day.

They filled an ecological niche, which is occupied by birds by day, and largely vacant by night. This is true of both the insect and fruit eating species.

OWN ... IT!

OWN!

What benefit do the wrinkles on a bats face, and around it's nose, provide for the bat?
