Quote:
A new model of a mobility aid for the blind was designed using microprocessor and ultrasonic devices

Quote:
In this model, a downswept FM ultrasound signal is emitted from a transmitting array with broad directional characteristics in order to detect obstacles.

The ultrasound reflections are then picked up and evaluated by a two channel receiver.
Quote:
The frequency of the emitted ultrasound is swept from 70 to 40 kHz within 1 ms, so it has almost the same characteristics as the ultrasound a bat produces for echolocation
.
The blind person is then able to listen to these sounds through earphones. They can also determine how far away the object is as well as its size once they have mastered the technology.
Quote:
With it a blind person can recognize a 1-mm-diameter wire.

  amazing how technoloogy can improve the lives of those less fortunate  It has been so succesfull that the individual can also interopret several objects around them and navigate through them

Thanks for taking the trouble to look this up Ods; Isn't it amazing where technology
is taking us!

There is also this article I found interesting about a revolutionary walking cane that
does something similar.

As a rule fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) roost about a wingspread apart from one another.
However, there is an event that takes place every year in southern Africa that causes this
to change, and the bats are said to roost so distinctively, that "from a distance they look
like swarms of honeybees, their densely packed brown bodies hanging from every bole and
branch of every tree and even from one another." What event is this, and where does it
take place?

I found this:

Quote:
Distribution: The Walberg's epauletted fruit bat can be found in Africa, anywhere south of the Sahara desert. These bats live in woodland and savannah areas, and prefer the edges of forests. During the summer, they migrate in large numbers to Tzaneen, in the Soutpansberg district of South Africa, attracted by the ripening crop of guavas.

Are you thinking of the annual gathering next to the Musola river in the Kasanka national park in Zambia?

They arrive from the Congo in time for the rainy season, due to the huge numbers of fruit available in the area. They weigh approx. 700 gram each ... but are known to break tree branches, because of the numbers congregating in the sleeping areas.

WEG Magazine March 2010 has a nice article.

Thanks Imberbe, yes the arrival of the bats to Zambia's Kasanka National Park usually in October.

Known as one of the great wildlife wonders, it is said that up to 8,000,000 Fruit Bats arrive.
