'Spangenberg' is a baby Chacma baboon, found hardly alive near an industrial mine, with a severe head fracture and raw burn wounds on his face, he was so severely injured it was thought he would not recover and was almost put down.

However, the C.A.R.E. organisation undertook the task of nursing him back to health again. Three months later he was finally well on his way to recovery. He was named "Spangenberg" after his kind rescuer who bothered to pick him up, find the C.A.R.E. organisation, and give him a second chance in life.
He is rich or poor according to what he is, not according to what he has. ~Henry Ward Beecher

Another baby orphan in the care of CARE. Little Peanut-Jason has had his arm amputated, but recovered well.

Which SA icon witnessed baboons 'walk to freedom'? Where and when?

Nelson Mandela supported the release of 4 baboons that had been held in captivity in appalling conditions and transferred to C.A.R.E. Ten others were later released. Mr Mandela was at C.A.R.E in April 2001 to witness the first "walk to freedom"; synonymous with his own "walk to freedom" in 1990!
