In the northern hemisphere, which is the only galaxy untrained observers can see with the naked eye?

Andromeda. In some southern latitudes, and at certain times of the year, it can also be seen.

The Golden Record is stored on the Voyager probes and contains sounds and images showing life on earth. Basically, it is the "message" in the bottle.

TP. However, the chance that alien intelligence in far-away places ever find the probes is miniscule, as the size of the capsules in relation to the volume of Space is probably less than the ratio between particles and the gaps between them in molecules.

Thanks OWN. The Voyagers were broadcasting so maybe (huge maybe!) someone might be able to home in on these signals and locate them - and then we end up with Independance Day

Okay, continuing on the same theme, where are the Voyagers currently, and why is Voyager 1 currently actually getting closer to Earth?

"Voyager 1 and 2 are currently in the "Heliosheath" -- the outermost layer of the heliosphere where the solar wind is slowed by the pressure of interstellar gas".

"Because Earth moves around the sun faster than Voyager 1 is traveling from Earth, the distance between Earth and the spacecraft actually decreases at certain times of the year" ?

Independence Day, huh, TP? Independent from what, I wonder? :hmz:

TP, actually a sneaky Q there. :naughty: But very clever too.  Of course, technically speaking, this is true for a short time, but it does not mean that the Voyager spacecraft are heading towards Earth; in fact, they are heading out beyond the solar system and into Deep Space. As Philip notes, they are in the Heliosheath at present.

Spot on Philip1

You are correct OWN, a little sneakily worded  The Voyagers are still moving outwards and, as both you and Philip1 said, are in the heliosheath. As Philip1 put it, with the Earth moving in a faster orbit around the sun than the Voager is travelling, the Earth is actually moving outwards in it's elliptical orbit towards Voyager therefore reducing the distance between them.

I've been following the tale of these probes since they were launched in the 70's and find it, as always, fascinating what humankind can achieve considering the relatively primitive systems available to the designers of the crafts.

Was'nt the premise of Independance Day (movie) that the aliens found one of the Voyagers and because of the materials in the probe and the Golden Record they decided to rape and pillage? :hmz:
Over to you Philip1.
