Hi All,

Nile crocodiles are not the only reptiles in which the sex of the hatchlings are determined by the incubation temperature!

In many species of the Chelodian family (including tortoises, terrapins & turtles) the sex of hatchlings are also determined by the egg incubation temperature. There are however some differences, for example:

1. The incubation period of the Chelonians is longer than that of the nile crocodile (4-15 months against the 3 months for crocs).
2. In the case of the croc females are produced at lower egg incubation temperatures, in the case of the Chelodians females are produced at higher egg incubation periods.

Hi all

I think I will take the floor

I am endemic to the South Africa occuring only in a few esturine regions, the population of my species in the Knysna estury is threatened by over exploitation and habitat destruction. I am listed on CITES APPENDIX II and as endangered in the Red Data book.
What am I?

What is so different about a leather back turtle when compared to general reptile characteristics?

Is it there lifespan?
Also, Sea turtles have an extraordinary sense of time and location. They are highly sensitive to the Earth's magnetic field and use it to navigate.
