Well at least I now know you listened to me!

But I did not say anything about shooting ...I'm not that kind of guide!

Because this is a walk not a run and animals like to catch running prey.

I agree with freda...animals will chase running pray. is it also something to do with the smell of fear? if you are running, you are obviously afraid.

Imberbe, if they get out of order I'll discipline them...

Just give the order.

Yes, you are correct. When a person runs it can trigger a chase response. Especially in predators, but also other animals. You are seen as weak. Standing your ground in fact betters your chance of not being attacked!

Also, you will not be able to outrun any animal (Well maybe a tortoise.) Even animals such as rhino, hippo etc. that is seen as slow, is in fact much faster than even the fastest human.

Another reason not to run is that you do not know in to what you are running. It may be a case of out of the pan and in to the fire!

While you are in the group, your guide can still protect you. If you run, the guide will not be able to help!

But that is enough of that!

I can feel the air grow colder as we approach the river. I think I hear frogs croaking.

The river is so pretty in the dawn light.

It is truly beautiful next to the river at this time of day. Hear the francolin calling!

But, we must be careful!

There is an important factor the guides have to take in to account when walking so close to the river, especially this early in the morning.

Q: What is it?
Q: Why early in the morning?

Could it be hippos ?
They graze at night and can move a long distance from water and then return to their pools in the morning.
They can be extremely dangerous out of the water.

Hippos as p@m says perhaps crocs needing to warm up? and most animals/predators seem to like an early morning drink.
