Found an interesting article about this.

The dry kernels of the fruit of this tree are sometimes burnt as torches, and this practice has inspired its English common name.

Balanites maughamii ,
Sprague Green Thorn,
Common name Torchwood???

(Seeds contain large quantities of a colourless oil that burns well and has good lubricative qualities)

Well done, ZZ! I'm impressed! Over to you...

One of my first trees I could identify (aged 2 or 3) was "Ba-la-ni-tees." My dad's a botanist.

You can easily recognize this tree by its beautiful fluted trunks. There are some nice specimens growing on the left hand side of the road just as you enter Skukuza.

restio you really had me going there - not the sharpest pencil in the box on these

Fist thought it to be Tinderwood but then remembered the seed thing.

Great question - had to switch gears quickly

I was named for a British discoverer who was a great explorer of Africa. He spent five years in southern Africa during which he traveled more that 4.300 miles. He described many new species, and collected more than 63,000 specimens of plants and animals, a large number new to science.

He donated many of his specimens to the British Museum and then fell out with the museum authorities when some of the specimens were damaged. This fight led a museum keeper to dub the named animal after the discoverer when he described it scientifically. The genus name was later revised.

Who am I
