The Tsonga word for lion is Ngala?

:hmz: picked it up on Tsonga/Shangaan.

Wasn't a very good question now was it.... but lets try anyway.... the name was derived from an incident in 1956 when the ranger, who this tusker was named in honour of, was bitten by an lioness along the Timbivati spruit.

Grantmissy

Emerging tuskers - the legend continues...
"Origin of Name: Named for Uys de Villiers (Tol) Pienaar who served in conservation for South African National Park for 36 years. (Ngonyama is the Tsonga word for ‘Lion’. This nickname derives itself from an incident on the 21st July 1956 when Tol was bitten by a lioness along the Timbavati spruit (where present day Roodewal camp is).Tol was also known for his green eyes that could flash like a lion’s when angry".

Ngonyama is the one Grantmissy :)

I had a chat to someone and they said that Shangaan and Tsonga is pretty close with some referring to lion as Ngala and some to Ngonyama  so sorry about the confusion in the initial question :gflower:

This elephant bull was named for Phineas Maluleke, who was a field ranger in the Kruger National Park. This Tusker lived in the Shingwedzi and Mooiplaas areas. What was his name?

Well Done Philip1
Massunguine was quite the boy :) His left tusk measured 272cm and his right tusk 258cm and they we well matched too. He was estimated to have been 53years of age when he died.

Thanks Grantmissy :gflower:
