Feathers are the diagnostic feature of birds.

 Correct, although there is now some controversy even over this "fact" as the status of Archaeopteryx is under question. :hmz:

What two systems of a Bird are uniquely adapted for flight?

There are more than two. I will exclude feathers for this question as this may be too obvious. Thereafter, I would say that the two most important adaptations that facilitate flight is a lightweight skeleton (lightweight bones) and air-filled cavities linked to the respiratory system that increase buoyancy.

QWN....You are right in a way, but i am looking for Two systems that are uniquely adapted for flight. (You mentioned one in your answer). :)

In addition to OWN's reply, birds also have unique digestive systems which are highly adapted for rapid digestion.

Own and Phokojwe :) Over to you.

Birds have digestive and respiratory systems that are uniquely adapted for flight.

Several owls species have "ear" tufts on their heads but they aren't ears at all. What is the purpose of these tufts?

This is a subject that still has hypotheses, none of which have been entirely proven. The three main contenders seem to be that the tufts are used for mimicry, recognition, or camouflage. The mimicry theory suggests that the tufts resemble mammalian ears and so make the owl appear more frightening to mammalian predators. This theory would then suggest that owls and mammalian predators would closely co-exist, which is not always the case. The recognition hypothesis asserts that the tufts allow similar species to identify each other at night by silhouette, but this hypothesis falls down because it has been shown that similar species usually locate members of their own through vocalisation, and long before sight is used. The most attractive explanation seems to be that the tufts are used to assist in camouflaging the birds in forest canopies because, when threatened with danger, the owls will elongate their bodies and erect their ear tufts, thereby breaking up their shape and making them look more like branches. Also, this explanation suggests that tufted owls should be nocturnal and roost during the day, as night-roosting owls would not need this camouflage. As almost all populations of tufted owls are both nocturnal predators and arboreal, the camouflage theory seems to be the best to-date.

I'll hand it to you OWN

Camouflage seems to be the most likely purpose of these tufts
