Of course it must be a fish. Why is it called a fish eagle after all? So, no points for you two. Which type of fish? The weight is also not correct. (MY source is 'Birdlife Africa')

Ok Rooies.

:hmz: "Aside from fish, this efficient raptor will also take the young of water birds such as the lesser Flamingo, and very occasionally will go for Monkeys, Crocodile hatchlings, Frogs and insects. Except for the odd dead fish, fully mature African Fish-Eagles rarely feed on Carrion unless food is particularly scarce".
:? No mention of "which" type of Fish.
:hmz:

"Should the African Fish Eagle catch a fish over 1.8 kg (4 pounds) it will be too heavy to allow the eagle to get lift, so it will instead drag the fish across the surface of the water until it reaches the shore. If it catches a fish that is too heavy to even allow the eagle to sustain flight, it will drop into the water and paddle to the nearest shore with its wings".

The catfish is the fish eagle's favourite prey despite the fact that the catfish has a bony head. Fish eagles know exactly where to grab each prey to enable it to kill the prey quickly. They select a catfish of about 400 gram.

Who wants to go next?

Isn't barbel and catfish the same?
I'm not a fish person so I don't know, this is a serious question...

Think so, Heksie - as far as we know - Barbel are known elsewhere in the world (e g USA) as Catfish.

"Barbels are group of small carp-like freshwater fish, almost all of the genus Barbus.

Catfishes (order Siluriformes) are a diverse group of ray-finned fish. Named for their prominent barbels, which resemble a cat's whiskers".

:? Agree with both of you. I also thought they were the same. :?

Ok I got a new lifer this weekend, will descrive it and want an ID please...

It is a wader, found it at Rietvlei at a birdhide. It isn't shy, it has long orange legs and the bird is about 45cm in lenght. It has an orange beak and a small head. It is very colourful with purple and green and all sorts of shiny colours. I couldn't believe my eyes, thought it flew into the rainbow and then fell.

What's the easiest way to tell the difference between wading birds and perching birds?

Heksie

It is indeed the anatomy of the foot. With perching birds, the toes remain curled and pulled together as long as the legs are bent, allowing these birds to perch for hours at a time. Wading birds have webbed or lobed feet
