Have a wonderful trip, Imberbe. Happy Christmas.

Now look what happens when you leave this forum un attended for too long! Firstly someone seems to have lost my Avatar! :( And secondly it seems that you guys forgot how to have a proper Quiz. It seems the Q turned in to CC! Eich!

Q 17

Is it true that a giraffe can shed its horns? And if so, how do they do it?

Q 18

Is it true that you can identify by the skull whether it was a male or a female giraffe. And if so, how?

Oh, wow, look... a real quiz! :P Goodie!!

Too late and too tired to get the books out, so here goes nothing:

Q17: I would say no. A giraffe's horns are bony structures, covered with skin and hair, that are attached to the skull (unlike 'real' horns, they have their own core and are connected to the skull in a different way... there's a term for it, but can't think of it now). So I would say that, in theory, a giraffe could lose it's horn(s) maybe even without serious consequences, but it would be incorrect to call it shedding. Animals with antlers can shed, animals with horns cannot.
Q18: Hm... Yes? A bull's horns are thicker and closer together at the base.

And now I need to get some sleep. Storm is finally calming down!

Q 17: What José said.

Q 18: Yes, it's true. The skull of a mature male has extensive ossification over front of skull, above eyes, and on rostrum. Typically weighs 2-3 times that of a female. Females may have additional bony knobs on forehead, like the male, but do not have such extensive bony areas.
