I spoke to a police officer at the Malamulele police station this morning. According to him there is no activities of unrest on the Makhado - Punda Maria road. He mentioned that the road is safe to travel. We were worried as well.

Thank you so much

We're (All the men and boys in the family....7 of us) off on our 6th annual December Kruger Trip soon. Well, in 5 weeks or so.

This year we're going to Punda and we cannot wait for the time to pass. We are a bit concerned though... :hmz:

Firstly, the route to the camp. Which route is the most direct from JHB. We pretty much want to get there in the quickest time possible.

And is all the unrest in the area a thing of the past? :sniper:

Also, are all the roads in the area around the camp open. And what about the Pafuri area?

Thanks in advance. :k

Hi Gecko - you will really enjoy Punda Maria! The staff were all very friendly and helpful when we were there. We stayed in a chalet and it was well-maintained, new linen, microwave etc. The camping site looked clean and the bird hide is close-by.

I was there early in October. The route we took was N1 to Polokwane - good road. Just before Polokwane we took the R71 which then took us to the R81 to Giyani. This road has recently been up-graded and was good, with the exception of a short stretch past a residential area (presumably municipality non-maintained, as opposed to the rest of the road provincial maintained). The R81 then joins the R524 which takes you to Punda Maria Gate. I can't give an exact time it took, as we visited friends in Polokwane and refuelled the bakkie and ourselves in Giyani.

We were lucky that our trip took place between the two lots of unrest in the area. I suggest you check the situation (police, SANParks website, Forum) just before you go.

The road to Pafuri is still being repaired, but is open. The road to Crooks' Corner was re-opened while we were there and we had a good trip up there. It was quite shocking to get some idea of what the floods had done and the amount of work needed to restore the roads.

Have a great trip!

Thanks HippoT.

So pleased to hear that all is close to normality. Pafuri is without doubt my favorite part of the Kruger.
We are mostly Northerners (not too keen on the crowds down south) but Punda will be the farthest north we've stayed on one of these Dad's 'n Boys trips. Mostly Shing and Letaba (but it's a loooooong trek to Pafuri from Letaba and back......still do it though  )

In 2010 we went to Bataleur and it was quite stunning. The Kruger was a carpet of green and it was stinking hot  . Over 45 degs on most days and it cooled down to a chilly 38 or so at night

We're staying in one of the Family Bungalows for the week we're there so I'm sure the aircon will take a pounding.

Dear All

Please be informed that the Punda Maria Restaurant will be temporarily closed as from 26 - 10 December 2013 due to renovations. We apologise for the inconveniences.

Some posts further back (about 2008) mention that the reception would be moved to between the gate and petrol station. My last time in Punda Maria was when I stopped en route to Shingwedzi in 2011 and no changes had taken place (not that i noticed anway).

Are these changes still going to happen, have they happened?

We were at Punda Maria in October 2013 and the Reception was still in the same building with the shop and restaurant.
