S100/GUDZANI LION PRIDE

Unread postby carolynn » Sun Sep 15, 2013 3:43 pm

There is a large pride of lions regularly seen in the S100/ Gudzani area. When we saw them on Wed 11 September, one of the 9 cubs had a serious injury to its right front leg and was really in a bad way - very thin and not moving about at all like the others. If anyone has seen them subsequently, it would be great to know whether the little one is still managing to keep up with the rest of the pride (9 cubs, 5 youngish males and 3 lactating females- but there could be more that we could not see)

S100 Mega Pride

Unread postby Cole » Thu Jul 03, 2014 9:09 pm

Hi All

Has anyone seen or heard of any sightings of the S100 Mega Pride.
I haven't heard or seen any sightings about them in quite sometime.
If you unaware of the S100 Mega Pride, they are a pride of lions. They consist of around 30+ lions.

I'm heading up to the park in two weeks time for two weeks.
And would love to see them.

Hope to hear some good info that they still around.

I'm sure the Mega pride is around Cole, but as all Kruger sightings it's a case of being at the right place at the right time, I do hope the pride shows itself to you

Super thanks for the reply.
Perhaps I might see them. I'd love to see them again.
I last saw them 2012 in July. Crossed fingers.
Have a good trip as well Afriphile.
I'll be in the park on the 25th July till the 4th August.
Lower Sabie 3 nights, Skukuza 3 nights, Satara 4 nights and back to Skukuza for 3 nights. Then sadly head home.

Well said, Afriphile; the so-called mega-pride (not the only one, mind you) does alter its numbers according to environmental and leonine dynamics. We did see part of it on the upper reaches of the S100, but that was two-and-a-half years ago (20 cubs and 7 lionesses). Last November, we saw eighteen of them, recognising that most of these had been the cubs we had seen crossing the road eighteen months prior. What had added pizzaz to the original sighting was that it had been around midday and so only one other car was around. If we see them again this November, we'll keep you all posted.

Did that area 4x in the past school holidays, but did not even sniff 1 lion! closest was a small group on the s41.
Hope you have better luck!

That's the Park for you, FvH. :slap: One day you'll see five separate sightings along that road, and then, as you (sadly) note, not a "sniff". Hope you saw a ton of other things, though?

We came across a large pride of lion on the S100/ S41 intersection by the Gudzani dam. We found 2 lioness leading a number of cubs down to the dam for a drink. There must have been 10+ cubs. After their drink the 2 lioness lead the cubs away into the bush towards what looked like a kill in the distance - there were a number of vultures in the trees. No doubt the rest of the pride were also in the area.
