Currently the Croc Bridge is closed which is why we are now in Malelane camp waiting to leave for home in the morning.
There are updates on rivers/weather/flooding etc in the KNP forum as well.

was the new bridge built on top of the fundaments and pillars of the old bridge or is it an entirely new construcion, maybe even at a slightly different position? the web sources I found so far seem to give inconsistent information

second question: what was the longest closure of the old bridge, does anyone remember?

last but not least: has the new bridge ever been closed due to high water levels?

thanks

Yes, the new bridge was built on top of the foundations of the old bridge.
It was just raised to try and eliminate it being flooded as frequently as before.

And yes it has been closed a few times since being built, in fact on the 10th March this year we stayed in CB and were unable to leave due to the bridge being closed due to the flooding. 8)

Have a read through the Croc Bridge bridge and gate Topic

thanks Elsa - so initially, there were two bridges, though - the railroad bridge (which is partially still standing) and a car traffic road (which as been re-newed), correct?

The rail bridge is still there, badly damaged in the 2000 floods.
Not sure when it was last used, suspect many years before that.

Correct on the car bridge!

I believe the train bridge was probably last used about 40 years ago, when the rail line was closed
