HI all
I am doing a little research for a story in Wild magazine and was wondering if you can help. What do you recon are the top five waterholes for game viewing in Kruger?

Anyone got any suggestions with reasons?

Cam

This is an extremely subjective topic. If you get 100 responses, you might not get the same 5 in any.

Mine that have been good, in no particular sequence.

1. Sunset dam outside Lower Sabie, lots of activity
2.Transport dam, on the Skukuza road from Pkop, the scene of that legendary video, saw a wild dog kill there
3. Lake Panic hide, great birding
4. Rooibosrand dam near Bateleur, for sable
5. Silolweni dam south of Tshokwane, lots of activity

Nsemani Dam (Best game congregation in Winter)
Sunset Dam (Just because you are so close)
Lake Panic (birding)
Leeupan (Birding & Game)
And I know this is not a waterhole, but the entire stretch of the Letaba river on S44

I think Nsemani Dam, Sunset Dam and Lake Panic should definately be in the TOP 5 list.

What about Mpondo and Mestel Dams...

Just a question, wasn't Silolweni dam breached due to algae

Wow! This is not going to be easy. Every waterhole in KNP has its own special something and it will be very hard to make a choice, but this is my top 5

1. Sunset Dam
2. Shitlhave
3. Gudzani
4. N'semani
5. Lake Panic

A couple of years ago we stopped at Mlondozi Dam for brunch (we always try and have at least one brunch at Mlondozi each trip!!).
Whilst there we saw elephant, rhino, buffalo and lion - not bad!!
It is a wonderful viewpoint and we have seldom been disappointed there (sometimes battle to get a spot to sit, though).

This year we will be further north, so won't get to Mlondozi.

Renosterkoppies usually has rhinos and warthog.
Sunset dam is wonderful- always got water and always has lots of bird life hippos and crocs and the possibility of much more
Mlondozi can be great in dry seasons when the waterhole there is the only water source for miles around
Siloweni is in great lion country

Have been thinking more.

Lake Panic wonderful for birds and hippos.

Spent at least an hour last November at Transport Dam watching an elephant having a wonderful bath - went completely under the water several times.

Have seen wild dog at Sunset Dam. Also seen huge crocs tearing a carcass apart, very near the edge nearest the cars.

Rooibosrant Dam near Bateleur had interesting birds and animals.

Not a waterhole as such, but the Sabie River from Skukuza to Lower Sabie produces some wonderful sightings.

First 3 generally accepted:
1. Nsemani (exceptional wildlife)
2. Sunset Dam (very close, lots of animals interacting and activities)
3. Lake Panic (there's always something)

And my 2 personal others:
4. Transport Dam
5. Leeupan

Other smaller waterholes I prefer are Sonop (H6), and Duke (s137), Renosterkoppies (s114), Ngotso (H1-4), Klopperfontein (s61) Gayizenga (H5)

Hope this helps

Have just been watching that amazing 8 minute U-tube video "Battle at Kruger". They mention it was shot at Transport Dam. Where is this?

It is an excellent spot and famous for the Transport (Vervoer) Dam pride on the H1-1 on the Skukuza/Pretoriuskop Road.
The pride often sleeps on the walls of the dam - or right on top of the hill on the eastern side of the dam, trying to ambush prey on their way down to the dam - and almost a definite on a night drive.
We once saw them stalking a huge herd of buffaloes there. Hope this helps.

Bottom line, it is a toss of a coin.
If you drive away after seeing nothing, chances are a pride will appear from nowhere...
It all boils down to being at the right place at the right time.
We have been going to the KNP for many moons - with highest sighting of lions a tally of 42 in seven days (excluding sightings of the same pride twice a day etc.), but never less than 20 a week.
(Must also state that we drive around until we find carnivores - our favourite animals).
With a tot of patience, you can bargain on sightings of territorial lions at Nsemani, Mavumbye, Renosterpan pride, etc. etc.
And we find them there year-after-year.
