Hi

I have a phobia about snakes so I was really amazed at the snakes we saw over the Easter Weekend. I was "Privileged' to see a python squeezing a poor little impala on the road from Skukuza to Lower Sabie. Was unable to get a photo not that I wanted one. Next day on the Crocordile River road a python crossed in front of our car. (Shiver) still didnt get a picture, Went on a sunset drive to encounter on the road a mocambican spitting cobra shiver again and a few hundred metres on a puff adder. This time I managed to pluck up courage to take a photo. I haven't seen so many snakes in a long time. They must be getting ready to hibernate. Oh well at least I managed to give people a few laughs with my shudders!!!

Hi Nicolette

We have seen a few snakes as well in the Kruger. Also mostly crossing the roads.

One night we saw a African Rock Python at Lower Sabie on the other side of the fence (thank goodness). We followed it with the torch for a while.

Also not too fond of snakes.

Nicolette in my husbands dreams he would have been in his element, and in my nightmares I share your shudders, but would definitely have managed a pic or 2.

Your were very privileged indeed, Nicolette. I would have loved to see all of your snake sightings.

Last time we saw a herald snake chasing a frog on the road which was a nice sighting as well - but we didn´t see any of the big snakes.

I share you sentiments Nicolette ... give me the "ghrills". I cannot watch any documentary about snakes or even look at pictures.
Last Easter we saw a python lying on the road and then disappearing into the bush, as well as a small brown snake (name?) moving up a tree into a hole in the trunk.
This easter we saw a brown and white snake (about 1m) slithering across the road in front of our car.
Have seen a small puffadder two years ago, and believe it or not a nimwit tourist got out of his car to get a closer photo.
But, boy, you saw your fair share this time around.

Your lucky to see so many snakes - even though they give one the shivers  . The only snakes I've ever seen in the KNP were roadkill :(

Great sightings Nicolette!

We saw a Night-Adder at Tshokwane and two of those blind snakes...one close to Mopani and another one close to Afsaal.

Hi,

We were lucky enough to see a Black Mamba just south of Mopani. it crossed the little loop to the tsende river and about 5m from the road behind the first tree it raised its head about 60cm or so of the ground  and looked at us for 5 or 6 minutes before turning and moving out of sight. It was about 2.5m long. Got some photos but can only see it when zooming on the screen. My 300mm lens decided its time to stop focusing. :cam:

Then just south of Eendrag water hole we came across a very big spitting cobra in the road. Flattend its hood  for a brief second or so and turned and went into the grass. got a photo of only its tail as it went into the grass.

Almost stepped on a lil night adder, around 30cm long, just after I lit the fire one evening. got some great pics of it.

Kruger is home to all sorts of creatures, not just Bambi, and allthough we might not like some of them, we must respect that it is their home. Also they might not be too impressed with US being there.

Hi Nicolette,
I've yet to see a snake in Africa. So the next time you can follow me and you'll be guaranteed to be snake free. (Or I can follow you and see many.) :)

RayK - I have also never seen a snake in Africa, or even in UK come to think of it!!
Have been visiting since 1976 and even lived there for four years.

I would not want a close encounter, but find them very fascinating and would love to see some while in the car. A python would be amazing!!

Hope I'm not temping fate!!

I have seen snakes in almost every country that I have lived in/visited including some close ups of the sort no one would like (a mamba under the bath (Avoid baths with legs in Africa), a gaboon viper strike
in Eastern ZIm (the joys of being a hiker) also more snake road kill in SANParks than I would like, but as some of these live sightings have taken place in public areas i.e. picnic sites, bird hides, etc I have kept quiet as there are still those out there that believe that the only good snake is a dead one
