I have seen quite a lot of snakes in KNP but I am still searching for my first python.

Guys, its definitely not a Mamba that CoS photographed - looks very much like an ex-Olive Grass Snake.

Cheers

Hi Kallis

CoS's snake was definitely an olive grass snake (alternative (old) name "hissing sand snake")

As for the njoga in the tent ........ doubt whether my rods would have stayed clean ....

GJ - how did you keep your nerve to take that photo, or did you have a loooong lens  ?

Cheers guys
Fanki

You might as well stand right next to it, 1mt is nothing for that snake to cover.
My guess is you didn't realise that it is a Black Mamba (I think)

Count your blessings.

Dag.

From the pic it appears it may be shedding its skin , thus could be that it's behaviour was unusuall - I believe this is so when they shed the old skin ?

.... as the eye appears to be opaque ...?

Over the Easter weekend we were driving towards Phabeni gate when I saw a chameleon crossing the road about 10m in from of me, he was about 1 third of the way across. Like lightening, out from the grass verge nearest the chameleon a snake slithered up to it, opened its mouth - Black Mamba! I don't know if the tar road was too hot (it was boiling!) or if it noticed us and got nervous, but it just as quickly turned and bolted back into the grass. Meanwhile, the chameleon was still slowly crossing the road, oblivious to the danger behind it. Within about 3 seconds, out came the mamba again and in a flash bit the chameleon on the leg, and just as quickly dissappeared into the grass again. As we were on a gate road, an hour from closing time, you can now imagine the amount of traffic coming in either direction. Nobody else got to see the snake, and couldn't understand why we were sitting staring at a dead chameleon. I don't know exactly how long it took the poor chameleon to die, but it was very quick, he was lucky if he got a further three steps in before falling over. We waited for ages for the mamba to claim its kill but with all the traffic driving past it never made another appearance before we had to leave. I hope that in time it did get to enjoy its meal.
My best sighting that weekend, best snake sighting ever and my second kill in Kruger after 44 years of visiting! The fist was equally interesting and out of the norm, but that's a story for another day!
