Please post a pic Rooies, would love to see it, please try include a bit of Nelspruit/White River, I believe there are now thousands of people in that area, not 1200!!!!

I will try my best, but it is very large, 2m X 2.5M and is framed. It will be a huge effort to get it out and scan it.

A very interesting map. No Berg en Dal????? What I found most interesting was the Kruger Census i.e.:

Your Map 2005 Map
Buffalo 10000 31060
Elephant 6566 12470
Leopard 650 1000
Lion 1200 2000
Cheetah 300 200
Wild Dog 350 350
Impala 200000 101000

I could not see Rhino mentioned on your map.

Berg-en-Dal was only built in 1983.

Notice the increase in roads, esp in the south.

I think you will find this very interesting....

My SO happened to be browsing in an old antique shop in White River a while back a struck gold !! An old map drawn up in the Surveyor Generals Office in 1928 ! It is fantastic and now proudly hangs in my diningroom.

I would like to share the following with you all:

* The map is broken up into 7 sections it seems. 1 is down south and 7 is up in the far north.

* What game is found is also on the map which i find fascinating. Up north was 'Inyala', Elephant, Giraffe, Tsessebe, Eland, Roan and Rhino. I thought Rhino were almost wiped out in KNP in 1928. The most fascinating animal to be found there ,according to my map, is Rhebuck !!! They are apparently found on the Crocodile River. Did they in fact mean Reedbuck perhaps??

* There is a ' Jack's Kraal' near Olifants ( which is not on the map), a police station at what could be Balule, further south Habonis George's Kraal and still further south, Puhlela's Kraal.

* Tshokwane is called Strasburg! Why?

* There is a ' Rest House' at the present day Lower Sabie.

* There are 'Lion Proof Shelters' all along the Open Road from Satara to Klaserie.

* There is a little inscription on the map and it reads: " Found in all suitable places; Lion, Leopard and other carnivorous animals, Klipspringer, Reed-Buck, Bush-Pig, Bush-Buck, Steen -buck and Duiker."

I love my map.....

What a find !

Prior to KNP proclamation Strasburg was the name of the farm in the Tskokwane area .

This made me pull out an old tea tray that I have that shows the map of the Kruger as well as some animals. What I love is that it shows Southern Rhodesia to the north and Portuguese East Africa to the east.

As mentioned in another thread, I have discovered an old Kruger map in my house, which is still in mint condition. Can anyone assist me, by way of elimination, in estimating the year in which it was printed. Pointers are;

No Pafuri gate and the road north of the Levuvhu river was closed to the public. No Pafuri picnic spot.
No Mahoni loop
No Mopani camp
The Gorge was still a picnic site. The road to the Gorge, the S43, started at the Bangu water hole.
Shawo picnic site was functioning.
No Bushveld camps
No H14 between Phala and the H1-6
No Sweni road and no N'waswitsonso road
No Berg-en-Dal

7400 elephants
1105 sable
Nothing was mentioned about rhinos

Chip should be able to asssist with this one , You knew Shawo ?
As a time line it was possibly pre 70's , as Gorge was closed about this time .
B& Dal was built in 1983 , I cannot comment re Mahonie & the road north of Pafuri .
What do you say , GML Smit ?

My opinion for what it is worth.

The map is a treasure and should be carefully kept.

It is a late 1960s print, the map I used in 1967/1968 indicates 6566 Elephant and 1200 Sable. It also shows the roads mentioned and also does not show the roads indicated by Rooies as non existent. Gorge is also indicated on my map, we actually visited the spot in 1967 - I remember it being very hot but also very impressive.

The official game count for 1970 indicates:

8821 Elephants
800 Sable Antelope.
21142 Buffalo
20227 Zebra
13950 Blue Wildebeest
3870 Giraffe
161950 Impala
745 Nyala
6520 Kudu
2217+ Warthog.
3307 Waterbuck
266 Roan Antelope
349 Eland
633 Tsessebe
