And that is it! You need open and close the gate each time you enter the area. Baboon proof bins are at every site, and taps close by at the entrance to each group on the road.

LOWER SABIE

Now - Lower Sabie...... What can I say? Wonderful area of the park..... But my least favourite camp site by far. It is more like an ordinary caravan park - sites all demarcated, small, close together and no particular view. I was fortunate that I can reverse my caravan reasonably well now, otherwise I would not have got into any of the sites still available! If you can manually manoeuvre the caravan though you will be OK.

There is a fair amount of shade about, and you will be unlucky to get a site with no shade at all. The sites are level too, in the main. The ground is hard now - so must be like iron in the summer!

The ablutions are on one side of the camp site, and have 4 toilets, 4 showers and 1 bath. There are smaller blocks - one near the huts has 2 toilets, 1 shower and 1 bath.

Power points are close to the sites - but the one next to me should have 5 sockets and only has 2 installed. Most bins have baboon proofing - but I notice that folk are not using the catches properly and several were knocked over this morning.

I walked to the laundry - very poor. One washer and 2 dryers - new R5 and R2 needed according to signs. It was being used by staff and there was dirty washing everywhere - I could not actually walk into the room! Maybe at another time it would be better..... but even the room and situation looked uninviting.

Everyone knows the shop and restaurant.......one of the best views in Kruger, of course.

A couple of photos from the camp site - all are much the same

One more thing about Lower Sabie - baboons are a problem! I was woken early in the morning by a large baboon raiding a bin near me. Some bins have baboon proof mechanisms, which are definitely effective, but more are needed.

CROCODILE BRIDGE

Crocodile Bridge cooks - literally at the moment! It is very hot - and was still 39C at 5pm today.

I will post photos of the campsite tomorrow - shade is available, but not much at the fence. Power points are fairly convenient, but a long lead may be needed in busy times, or for a couple of spots.

There are 2 ablutions blocks, one has 2 toilets and 2 showers, the other has 2 toilets, 1 shower and 2 baths. There is a laundry with 2 washers and 2 dryers - new R5 and R2 coins needed. Unfortunately the washers only used hot water so I ended up with a couple of ruined things......

The shop does sell take-aways, and the menu is different from the other camps - and the moment cheaper too.

The rangers dogs can be heard barking in the evening, and there is quite a bit of traffice passing the campsite to the staff village - which will not be solved with the new gate. It is probably one of the noisier environment camps during the day and early evening, and again early morning when the gate opens. The new gate will make it quieter for the bungalows, but not much different for campers.

It is still in a great area of the park, and convenient for Komatipoort for provisions if needed.

Thanks again to the appreciation society!

Photos of Croc Bridge (and I apologise that one is a bit wonky - obviously the heat was already getting to me after packing up!)

Remember that these were taken about 7.30 am and so there appears to be more shade than there is...... The best shade seems to be in the far corner, but then you will be near a tent used by staff - although I have never found that a problem.

One other thing I did not include above - there appear to be no taps other than the ones at the kitchen block or ablutions. Maybe being such a small area they were not considered necessary.

And some extra pointers:
1. Make sure you can cope with the tent/caravan alone if necessary - folk do not rush to help you (although I once watched a male camper help another male camper fold up a groundsheet while I was packing up and hitching up alone a short distance away!)

2. Getting to the site about 11am - 1pm seems to offer best choice of sites. I did however notice several folk leaving late (as late as 4.30pm!) and so missed a good spot.....

3. .....so this is a suggestion for SANparks. Why not issue campers with a large laminated number indicating day of departure. This must be displayed prominently on the 'road' side of their tent/caravan. It will discourage the late leavers, and enable newcomers to see if any good spots are shortly to be vacant.

4. More tips will be in the hints and tips for campers thread!

The end???? Maybe repeat trips will be needed to update........!?
