Hi Nkuhlu
We did the Madlabantu trail on the Easter Weekend in a Fortuner 3l D-4D Auto 4x4 . Road was perfect for a high clearance vehicle but I still recommend 4x4 capability for if/when you get stuck .
More game/birds was spotted than on the over ridden/driven (sic) S100 , S41 & S90.
Worth your while to book it & pay the extra fee for a morning drive , as long as you have the vehicle.

We did those roads a while back and our old 20 year old venture had no problems It felt like old times when all the roads were like that .. though when we asked at the Phala gate where they were and did they have a map all the lady said was she had not heard of them and we must stick to tarred roads and the park people don't like us using dirt roads !!! and she wouldn't budge !!! but now this was a while back and maybe she didn't know about them so we couldn't grumble .Well we went anyway .. was lovely .

Shidzidzii, thank you. I drive a compact suv, not 4x4, but have 200mm ground clearance, and best of all, only use 4.5l diesel/100km :D Perfect for a old Gal

Generally a 200mm clearance SUV can drive on most rough roads. And the Madlabantu trail for example is very doable.
Just be very cautious before attempting a potential place where you could get stuck as that is when you need a 4x4 and possibly a winch. Always look ahead anticipating hazards and be prepared to stop and assess situation.
The worst dangers are river drifts which have been washed out exposing rocks, and deep sand or mud (this danger is now much less 3 months after the last floods). You don't want to get stuck or damage the engine (oil pan).
A river in flood is a danger to any vehicle even the best 4x4 as the water easily pushes you off the crossing into deeper water pools. It just is not worth the risk. In January I u-turned on the S28 and at Duke's for rivers which I 99% could still have crossed - but 1% risk is not worth taking. Embarrassing and expensive .
I am still dying to know which SUV (especialy as it only uses 4.5l diesel / 100km) you have?

Did the road near Phalaborwa, mentioned by DB. Enjoyed it - didn't see much, except huge black mamba in the road and lovely herd of waterbuck at the river.

If possible, can someone be so kind to scan the map of these roads? It would be very helpful for planning. Thanks!
