Tshokwane is up and running, though when I was there it was still missing enough tables and chairs.

I am glad that this favorite picnic spot has been re-opened again. Although the flood damage was not good, I guess the facilities have been upgraded. Is the “Boerewors and Pap” back on the menu that they used to serve?

Yes, all back on the menu! But we had a tough decision to make when we were there a few weeks ago and opted for the venison pies (Kudu) with gravy and chips instead. They are being homemade at Tshokwane I believe - a must when you go there!

Thank you, I am glad to hear the good news :D . Some time ago there was a very popular thread regarding the famous pies at Nkulu and those pies were held in very high regard.

I hope these pies mentioed by Spydr will also become Kruger famous just as the Nkulu pies did  .

It sure is open and looking great FYI please make sure to carry some cash with you when visiting the picnic spot seeing that their telephone lines aren't up yet and no card transactions can be done.

I believe the Nkuhlu and Tshokwane pies are already famous - for good reason. We were a bit disappointed with the venison pies at Skukuza and could not get any at Satara (out of stock), where we previously always enjoyed good pies. I would go so far to say that the camps generally do not offer the same quality, due perhaps to their current franchisee? Every time we visit Kruger, there seems to be a new catering firm managing the camp cafeterias.

Looks like the picnic spots are not managed by the same catering firm and someone told me that the Tshokwane pies are actually made on-sight by the local ranger's wife (ditto Nkuhlu?).

One issue that has always irked us (traveling with kids) - no camp ever seems to have chocolate milkshakes available! They are always out of stock, although you can get other flavours. In June we could not get any at Letaba, Satara, Lower Sabie or Skukuza, but Berg en Dal finally came to our rescue!

This has been going on for years and I wonder whether it has something to do with the high rate at which catering firms seem to come and go, or whether it just has to do with bad stock management. Surely something as mundane and popular as a choc milkshake should not run out of stock within the first week of the June school holidays?

Have others had similar experiences? Maybe we should run an annual choc milkshake index to rate park camp cafeterias

I am curious to know if the 'new' Tshokwane looks the same as the 'old' one?

Exactly the same, except that it only has a few tables and chairs. They were all washed away in the floods!
