We did this road in 2007 with a trailer and had no problems at all. It was very productive (in July) and we saw many Steenbok, White Rhino and even a Sable, among other general game.

Did it again in 2008 with the same car and trailer and saw ellies close to Pretoriuskop and very little else for the rest of the ride.

So the road was fine for a trailer and imagine that it will be so still.

Hope you have a great trip. Look out for the Scops owl at Afsaal.

We saw one giraffe on the Voortrekker road in March this year.

And after reaching Pretoriuskop, it took my eyes about 20 min to regain focus from all the vibrations caused by all the corrugation on the road.

Maybe its been graded since then, but in March it was not too good.

Parts of it were bad at the end of April.
Didn't see too much in the way of animals, but birding was reasonable. Took it very slow, especially the first 15km.

I have driven the Voortrekker road on 25th of May.
Lots of rain fell prior to our visit and they were actually busy grading it when we were on the road. When I was there, about 80% of the road was good, with the last bit closer to Pretorius kop still in need of some TLC.
It can easily be driven with a trailer, the "bad" part was just vibrating a bit, that's all!

Can anyone tell us what they are doing to the road? It is closed for maintenance.

As far as I can tell, just general maintenance on it, possibly resurfacing and smoothing, I believe, from comments I have seen that it was in pretty bad shape before.
So hopefully when its reopened at the end of October it should be in much better condition.

Hi,

Any news if the Voortrekker road between Pretoriuskop and Afsaal is open yet? If not, when will this be open again?

I will be in the kruger from 1st December- I hope this road will be open by then?!

Thanks!

Hi BerkiSA,

I was in Pretoriuskop a couple of weeks ago, and I think the notice in reception said the road will be open at the end of October.
