This has consistently been a good road for us.

Over the years we have seen many great sightings along it, including a LIT that turned into a LOG on our last trip.
Our first serval was also on this road, and we have seen lions (and my dad saw doggies) at Leeupan, eles (and buffs and a rhino) an Elephant waterhole, and lions stalking buffs at Silolweni dam, where the leopard took out the crocodile. We also saw 4 cheetah cross the road. More convincing needed?

This road is one of the Kruger routes where we most often see herds of elephant. Last November month new born impala –plenty! In May this year lion. For us the road from Skukuza to Tshokwane is somehow a very “Kruger type” of route, probably the most “Kruger type” of route in the entire Kruger, if that is possible :) :thumbs_up: .

This section of the road has consistently been good to me for elephants. Last year we saw mating giraffes, two male lions and a small herd of sable, all within one hour.

Image of sable, for those who think it might be waterbuc :P

Not sure if this is the right thread to use to ask if Tshokwane is currently being affected by the striking Compass staff?
We want to stop there tomorrow for a quick bite on our way to Orpen so wondered if they are in actual fact serving meals or not?

As far as I know the strike is over now SF, so I am sure it should be perfectly Ok for you to visit Tshokwane.

Hi all

Probably just me, but recently(last two years), I have seen less on this road than a few years ago. I have had many lion sightings on this road especially around Silolweni dam. But after the dam was drained, my luck has gone. I also just missed sable sightings twice on this road :wall: . Great road for elephants! Whenever I do this road I have to go to Leeupan. There is always something to see and great for birding!

Has anyone else also experienced this road getting 'slow' on sightings?

It has been quiet on my recent trip.
Although nice Kudu and Nyala sightings :D

In my opinion you have to drive this road as early as possible, due to the High volumes of traffic {especially during public holidays}. We've had Lion sightings on most of our trips down this road. Last December they were often seen at the Tablets.
In 2005 a pride of Lions took down a Giraffe about 50 - 100m after the turn off to the road linking the H4-1 and the H1-2. We were at Nkulu picnic site when people told us about what they witnessed :mrgreen: . It happened at about 08:30 in the morning. They took the Giraffe down in the road and it caused major traffic congestions in all 3 directions.

We also try not to miss Maroela Loop as we had magnificent Lion, Leopard and Wild Dog sightings on this little loop. Sometimes it's full of sightings and sometimes there's NONE! We've even had it without an Impala on the loop! :big_eyes: Our very first Lion sighting in the park was on Maroela loop back in 2004, maybe that's why this road is so special to me :hmz:

We also managed to see cheetah on H1-2 once and only two Leopard sightings.

We drive this road every year, but we prefer to rather drive the S36 and then the S34 towards Tshokwane as it's often very rewarding! We spent almost 3 hours with a coalition of 4 young male lions on the S34 without any cars joining us! :cam:. They had a stare off with a herd of buffalo and we thought the we might be lucky but..... nothing happened! :cry:

{For the record, we also saw Sable at the S33 / S36 junction two years back, and I'm almost sure it wasn't Waterbuck as there was no ring on it's ..... and the animal was a completely different colour! :twisted: }
