I was thinking of driving this road during over the next couple of weeks, but reading how badly corrugated the road is I'm having second thoughts...can anyone who has driven this road recently confirm it is still as bad?

Bit difficult to judge, some of those posts go back to 2005-2006, drove the road less than a year ago and it was fine and also being graded at the time.

We last drove the road in Feb this year and it was definitely an improvement from previous times, there were just small patches of corrugations.

I would say the H5 is in much worse condition currently.

I agree with Elsa, the S36 does have some bad patches notably from the Shimangaweni Dam to the S125 turnoff approx 17 kms. The rest of the road in my experience is okay. I would definitely give it a try.

We have done the S36 twice in the last 2 years and here's some pics of some of the sightings. We have also had ellies swimming in Lugmag Dam and Shimangaweni Dam.

The road does have a few bad patches though.

The S36 south of Muzandzeni leads to some even better roads running East/Westwards ...

Personally prefer the s36 to the tar road! Best road for sable in my view, and the traffic is MUCH better. Jones dam always has something special, and the 2 picnic spots make the journey less challenging! I LOVE Mudzandzeni picnic spot when it's quiet, so too the s126 and s125 loops are wonderful, especially in summer.

You need to have patience, and a way of getting rid of the boring parts of the road (i.e an impala an hour) When with 2 cars, try a general Kruger quiz via walkie-talkies, or jokes or somethin. It works Don't think you will enjoy the s36 when you want to rumble down it.

My last drive along the s36 from top to bottom (3 hours) December 2009:

The area south of Muzandzenzi Picnic spot on the S36 is prime Sable country...Longish grass on well drained Granite soils

I have always had good luck at Shimangwaneni dam and Talamati camp hide on the adjoining S140

awesome road, driven 3 times only, but have seen big pride of lions with 3 males, many sable, incl. a herd of 12-15. and a white lioness

has anybody recently done this road,and what is the condition of the road as to the corrugation,
planning to do this drive on my visit to the park,but need my vehicle to arrive in one piece,so please update recent visit.

We did this road in Feb and apart from patches of corrugations the road is in not too bad a condition, its far worse higher up, basically the section from the S145 Talamati road to the S125 we found to be the worst piece.

Very good idea, that road is always a worth drive. Even if you don't see many animals (only happened once to me) the landscape is beautiful and there is not much traffic

Did the road on the March long weekend...it's fine!
