A couple of years ago - about 3 I think, we were asleep in Tent 8 at Croc Bridge when I hurt an almighty crash, it was about 1 am. I jumped up - told my SO I think an elie had broken thro the fence. Next grabbed my camera and went outside - only to face an eating elie, broken fence, a couple of metres away from our tent. We phoned the ranger and they chased him/her straight thro another part of the fence. This had not been repaired by the time we left. Unfortunately my photo's were rather dark. By the time the rangers arrived he/she was eating next to the ablution block..
I believe this was not the first time this elie had done this.

Seems this topic hasn't enjoyed any attention for a while! Let me be the one to start it off again!!

We spent 5 night at Tamboti recently - the camp was almost empty - and had quite a few nocturnal visitors! The resident Ratel swept by a few times, a Civet gave us the once-over on two of the nights, but the 'stars of the show' were two familes of Dwarf Mongooses (Mongeese? Mongii??) who scampered around the tent, as well as a Large-Spotted Genet who actually came up onto the deck a few times every night! And NO, we didn't feed them!! On the third night we were there, he brought along his mate as well.... Pity I don't speak Genet - they hung around for ages!! Just sat there, quietly looking at us! Would have loved to chat to them.......

Yes, the local Hyenas did their patrolling, and Yes, the local Vervets and Baboons hung around as well - tried a few times to rob us of our food - but the Genets were fabulous!

It's not only the 'big and hairies' that are captivating....

Just PLEASE don't feed any visitors.........

We have never been so lucky with in-camp sightings as in the past week. We have never seen a honey-badger before- so in Tamboti we also had a few very nice sightings of the resident honey badger as well as the large-spotted genet, a large one and a smaller one. They also spent hours with us. These sightings were so special, and the kids were very excited. Unfortunately the monkeys managed to break into our tent- the tent (21, with a lovely view) was torn at the window in front and they managed to take a bag of biltong from the fridge top, and caused some havoc. So be careful. Then, in Skukuza my six year old daughter spotted bushbabies. There we were told by a very friendly couple that there were scops owls in the tree at number E114 in Satara. Low and behold, when we got to Satara, it just so happened that we got allocated huts number 113 and 114 and we could view the lovely little creatures all the time. We could hardly believe our luck. In Satara we merely had to stroll to the perimeter fence to be met by two huge hyenas (patrolling the fence), and an African wild cat- also a first for us.

We were mock "charged" by a big male elephant through the fence at Pretoriuskop. We also had a lovely sighting of elephants drinking and playing at Skukuza and saw a large genet in a tree at Berg-en-Dal. Amazing!

March 2009 Punda Camp - Two genets invited themselves to our braai (although they sat patiently, they were not fed!!)

March 2011 Satara Camp - Honeybadgers rumaged through our dustbins one night.

March 2011 Skukuza - Serval!!! - As we were getting in our car, a serval shot past us and shinned up the wall behind the restaurant.....................gave us a haughty look and shot off!!

Anyone ever seen hyena inside of skukuza camp?

Yes. I was in skukuza in June and had one in front of our room door ..Room 211

Apart from all the lovely animals drinking water at the Satara waterhole that we watched from our bungalow, the most interesting sightings we had in camp was an African Wild Cat, as well as a Honeybadger running from dustbin to dustbin, also at Satara during September 2011.

Had seen them as well The ranger said sometimes warthogs for example make holes in the fences or under the fences letting them in...

I saw 4-5 of them one night going through people's garbage. It was this time two years ago.

Not in Skukuza, nor ever Kruger, but my son saw a spottie sauntering along in the pre dawn gloom in front of the chelets in Twee Rivieren.

Apart from the Hyena encounters in LS and Maroela, I am very fortunate to have almost stepped on a Puffadder TWICE!!

The first time was at Tamboti at night, in the paved pathway next to our tent.

And the second time was December 2011 in Croc Bridge. I was minding my own business braaing when I decided to step literally a metre away from the braai.... next moment shivers dawned upon me as I struggled to keep my foot from actually touching the ground because there was an obstacle between me and the ground..... a Puffadder!! I screamed like a little girl! That little guy had to be watching me and my dad for quite a while!

The two things I fear most is spiders and snakes! I've had boomslang encounters in skukuza twice before, but the puffadder .... !

This December we're heading towards Balule for the first time...... let's see...
