Hi boriskat1. First of all, I'm very envious - you will love Tamboti. It has a very special feel to it.

We have a large bakkie (pick-up), so have lots of room when we go away. We always take lots of extra equipment - just in case. I would recommend that you take sharp steak knives, a cork screw, can opener, oven gloves, torches/head lamps. The basic stuff is usually there - varies from camp to camp.

Have a great trip!!

Be prepared. The weather is so unpredictable. Fortunately before I arrived in the Park, I stayed in the Drakensberg and therefore had warm clothes with me.

I have never been so cold in the Kruger as I was during the long weekend in August. Inside the tent was warm, but it was freezing outside. Staying in Unit 40 somewhat made up for it though. It must have the best view of the river and one really feels at one with nature.

Beware of the HoneyBadger who went swaggering down the dry river bed shortly after 6am. He was unsuccessful in his attempts to raid my trash bin.

I would suggest to take the following:

Sharp knives, Bottle opener/cork screw, can opener, dishcloth/towel, head torch, plastic dish/bowl

We stayed in Tamboti for 3 nights a few weeks ago and we heard lions roaring in the night and all sorts of other things! We heard a baboon at 3am run up the steps to our bin, pull it over and then run away hungry (barking!). We put ALL food into the food recycling unit that is away from the accommodation. It was truly terrifying to walk to the morning game walk meeting place from Unit 40 in pitch darkness at 0530 in the morning, especially as we could still hear lions!

I know how you feel . I tried an evening walk around the rear perimeter but gave up halfway when my nerves got the better of me.

If everyone placed their trash in the recycle bins, maybe, just maybe the Honeybadger would look for food elsewhere.

The walks are conducted by rangers from Orpen. The guides were excellent and full of information. One cannot expect to see lots on foot as animals are spooked by humans; we saw more on our previous walk, but I think we were unfortunate to be with a group of matrics who talked despite being told not to, and had put on so much hair spray and perfume, that the animals would have smelt them 5 miles away! The moral of this story is don't do yourself up for the bush! The walk was still fantastic otherwise though with some nice bird sightings including a Scops owl and a Bateleur eagle.

We love bush walks, but have never done any in the Orpen area. So, we will definitely be booking this ASAP.

Two more days to go… Such a pity we only have time for 4 days  , but I am already looking forward to spending a solid 15 days in Kruger next year

Best will be pick n pay Hoedspruit. Drive out of Orpen gate, 20min later turn right at first t junction, and then right again at next tar road on right. When aproaching Hoedspruit look for shopping centre on your right.

When you return use your other right hand for directions (left) !

Personally, when we enter Kruger, it becomes an exclusive experience to the extent that we do everything not to leave the Park gates (or even look at the outside world if we can help it). To this end, we take as many provisions with us as we can, keeping the meat frozen in a portable freezer and bringing vegetables and fruit in tins. The only thing we regularly buy from the Park shops is bread or rolls and briquettes and firelighters. Oh, and of course a set of braai tongs and a tin opener because, for some reason, it seems traditional to leave those behind.

Dup, I have a teenage daughter and she always says to me "Mommy, go and make friends with the neighbours because they might have a "hot" son.......

In response to OWN, veggies and fruit in tins   we do not eat anything in tins, in July 2012 the shop at Orpen never had milk(the longlife kind and the fresh kind) for the 7 days that we stayed at Tamboti and the bread/rolls were not very appealing. We hate going out of the park to stock up BUT on the other hand we sort of enjoy it because we know what is waiting for us when we return from the shopping trip or should I say mission
