If you only want accomodation for 6, then the GC6 ( not the GC6D'S) is great. The garden goes right down to the river, it has its own little lapa, the two rondavel bedrooms are generous size. It is also very very private. Great views o f the bridge. Also very good value. Shhhhh.....its our secret!

The GW2 is most definately not a guesthouse. It is build to serve as a supplement to GW1, shold a larger group be expected. I actually like the positioning better (Having Kruger nearly all around you), but it does not offer the same recreational facilities, although the bedrooms is not much different. the lay-out is also ot as pleasing.

Nyathi and GW1 is basically the same type of structure, both big units where the GW2 is not what i would call big.

From GW2 you have free access to GW1, altgough it is not directly linked, via the front lawn as it forms "one big area". standing at the riverside, facing the guesthouse you can clearly see the similarities in design, but yet being kept private.

Where there is a wall with a gate between Nyathi and GW1, seperating the two, the Gw1 & GW2 has a much more 'open and flowing" design, forming a better unit if combined.

If you are a smaller group GW2 would be fine, but for a larger group go for GW1, the combination of GW1 & GW2 or the ABSA, that is also a large river fronted guesthouse.

If you need photo's, please do not hesitate to ask and I will gladly e-mail it to you, as it is a frequent stay over for my guests on safari, giving me the oppertunity to stay there about every other month..

Morning

Not sure if I'm writing this under the correct folder, but here goes.

Camping in a tent at Skukuza this December - :D

Is there anyone out there that have previously camped here? If so, please can you advise what YOU think is the best site to try and find upon arrival?

This is a first for us - so am open to all and any suggestions.

Thanks kindly

Hi Melaniejayne

It is really going to be luck of the draw. If you arrive early - between 8 - 10 am, I think you stand a better chance of finding a good site.

Where you pitch camp will depend obviously on what is available when you arrive in the camp, and what you personally like. You might like to be close to the fence, or a level shady site, or closer to the ablutions. I like to head to the fence. Take your first turn to the right into the camping area and then look for a spot as the road takes a turn near the fence, to the right.

Thanks Dinkybird,
We would also ideally like to have a shady site, near a fence too, so will take your advise and try your route first. We plan on arriving at camp around 5h30 ish, so fingers crossed that there will be ONE suitable site for us .....

13 sleeps and counting

Lots of people also change sites, and so keep an eye out for someone who looks like they might be packing up and wait for them to move off.

Hi Melaniejayne and welcome

I agree with DB regading arriving earlyish (not too early as people will still be packing up). Skukuza has a nice variety of campsites, and can basically be divided into two sections:

Coming from reception there are campsites to the right and a bit further to the left.

Campsites to the right
This side is closer to the fence with a few sites being along the fence, but are on a bit of a slope. There are sites further up behind the ablutions but not very shady. I find this side's ablutions to be the best of the two.
Campsites to the left
These are generally shadier but beware where you set up. There are sites that are quite low down (upon reaching the camping area, first road to the left). These are nice and shady but if there is a downpour of heavy rain you WILL get flooded out. Rather take the second road to the left, these are closer to the ablutions and kitchen, nice and shady and reasonably flat. This side of the camping area's ablutions are in my opinion rather run down. One bonus is that these sites are closer to the pool, buuut ...... can also be a bit heavy in foot traffic depending where you set up.

Enjoy your trip

PS the ground is extremely hard there so be prepared. I use a 4lb mallet and long thick masonary nails and washers, work like a charm.

Hi, you can drive around the campsite using google maps. Here is the link to the first road to the right by the fence.

Hi AWOL_loki

Very interesting link. You dont perhaps have the same links to other camps. I tried to download the google earth plug-in for this, but was unsuccessfull.

Skukuza is indeed a fine camp. Very populated over Dec. though. MJ, best I can suggest is find a shaded area as you will cook in the sun. Along the fence is great. Hyenas in abundance at night as a result of some unfortunate individuals who got drunk there in the past and tossed their braaivleis over the fence. Hence the hyenas found a food source. Walking along the fence with a torch at 8 p.m you will most likely see the orange eyes. These hyenas have become rather domesticated and are not much bothered by humans. At times they are curled up against the fence. A great sighting, but for the wrong reasons. The team at Skukuza should be congratulated for the fine maintenance of the camp. The ablutions are very neat and hygienic. I wish you and yours happy holidays. The wife and I will have breakfast there on the 29th of Dec. en route to Letaba.

You have to make your own privacy.

Take a pneumatic drill instead of the 4 pounder!

Buy a battery pack and flourescent light.
