Dear Shrew,

Drop me a mail at joep.stevens@sanparks.org and I will send you a copy of one I have available, which hopefully is better than the one you already have.

Kind regards.

JOEP

I am planning a possible KNP visit in April and might include a stay at Letaba. The map only shows the unit numbers, no indication of which match with which code. Does anyone know where the BD3U units (perimeter) are located? Actual numbers for these units would be a HUGE help

Hi arks

Nice choice to go to Letaba, one of my favorite camps. Number 39 to 64 are BD3U units. We always stay in number 63 or 64 units because they are the closest to the fence and the fantastic little walkway down to the fence. Our favorite number is 63 however because its view is a bit better than 64. You can see some accommodation and view photos on this Thread Look for the pics I took of number 63 here and here

Enjoy your stay

We decided on camping at Letaba because of its central location. How is their camping site, anything I need to know and is there braai facilities? Does Letaba have a restaurant and is their shop reasonably stocked?

Thanks for the advice.

Great camping facility, good shop, restaurant not really so good. I just love to camp there, nice shade.

Just watch out for the buch of mongoose that has a lair on the south side of the camping ground, close to the Safari tents no 1 to 5. They love to raid the unsuspecting campers. 8)

If we do manage to find a spot next to the fence, what is the recommended length for the extension?

Hi Wildheart :D

I find Letaba one of the friendliest camps. It has a unique atmosphere. I also enjoy the wild life inside the camp fence, the bushbuck, squirrels and .. and .. and.

The trees are just wonderful. It is also a camp that can be walked with a lot of enjoyment.

Dirt road next to fence?

WH, the dirt road, or the river road to Olifants is about 80 meters from the camping fence.

I have seen lion walking down the road from camp a few times, and had this visitor while having a braai. He just stood there for about 2 hours feeding. It is a great camp for camping.

What i like when camping along the fence at Letaba is that it is on the southern side of the camp and you don't get that intense afternoon sun and heat in your face and the shade is a great help. Letaba is not far from Phalaborwa, 52 k's along the H-9 to to stock up if needed.

The restaurant has (imho) the best camp view in the park.

There is also a 'cafe' next to the restaurant.

The shop is large and well stocked.

Wildheart ,
One tip that might be of use to you and most camping newbies, when camping anywhere in Kruger, invest in some good strong tent pegs and a decent hammer (I keep a 2 lbs and a 4 lbs hammer in the caravan). Both have been used on many occations by fellow campers in Kruger. The ground can sometimes be as hard as rock. Maybe not too bad now after the rains.
A rubber mallet in my experience will not stand up to the task.
Enjoy your camping

We have stayed in the furnished tents (old sites in the middle of caravan park), and have camped in tents at Letaba on numerous occasions, the only creepy crawlies we have encountered have been red ants early hours of the morning crawling through our loaned tent which did not have a fitted ground sheet. I myself have never seen any snakes (thank goodness). We have camped right next to the fence and further back. Last year April mongoose, squirrels and various birds visited us every day as we even put out water for them as it was so hot.
Letaba is definitely one of my favourite camps, ie because of the rivier view and because of all the big trees in the caravan park.
