Hello,

I just came from 3 nights at Skukuza and it was amazing. Kruger is always amazing.

It was my second time there and I'm learning to apreciate any game view that I get (even the Bush Babys are pretty nice). But I still get more excited when I find the big cats. So, I would like to know which is the best rest camp to to spot then around? Would be Satara or Lower Sabie? Or any other? I'm thinking about May 2015.

Thanks

rcrRodrigo, both Lower Sabie and Satara are ideal to see big Cats, Good luck I hope you have great sightings of them

If I have to choose I would say that we have had marginally more luck in the Satara region.

I would agree with Satara for Lions & Cheetah.

Lower Sabie or Skukuza for Leopard
IMO the H4-2 (Skuks/LS road) is the best place in Kruger to see them.

rcrRodrigo, We were at Skukuza in December for 14 nights and saw leopard 13 different occasions, lions everyday and 6 times cheetah. We believe the south in the summer months are the best for spotting cats, but if you are planning to go in May I would also consider Satara or Tamboti.

But if you leave camp early and drive slow enough you will definitely see them.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the tips.

Last week I Saw two young male lions very close to Skukuza. I was on the morning game drive. I also saw a Leopard on the sunset game drive. But driving by my self, I only was enable to see lions very distant and all took place at the sabie river sides, but far from the road.

Why not do the Sweni trail (from Satara) ? Big chance to encounter lions while walking ;-)

I tend to agree with this. Time of year is also important. The savannah grasslands make it easier to see as well, particularly in winter.

We have always been very lucky with cat sightings in and around Satara. Lion, Cheetah and on the H7 en route to Orpen we saw Leopard in the trees along side Timbavati River.

My husband and I did a night drive in December 2009 and a male lion stood in the headlights of the vehicle and roared....I have never heard such a ground shaking sound, amazing! My daughter-in-law, who is from England was with us and her face was a picture!!!

A number of years back, just after turning from the H7 onto the Timbavati Road, we saw 3 male cheetah, standing on the branches of a broken tree.

Also seen wild dog in the Tamboti area.

Cannot wait for our December/January holiday!!

Satara in October/November in all directions has been good for us. Generally more open terrain than Skuz, better for photography :cam:

Olifants is also a place to see lions as when we were coming back from a sunset tour in July 2013 we encountered 5 lions blocking the road about a kilometre from the camp grounds.

The most lions we spotted though were on the S100 near Satara camp, there was also 2 cheetahs about 200m from the camp on our last day there.

I guess I'm gonna focus on Satara, because it's so hard to find two days at BD3 or BD3U available at Lower Sabie... :?

I know that Crocodille Bridge it's not a very popular rest camp, but I what do you think about the Southern Circle. According to this site: http://www.kruger-2-kalahari.com/suppor ... /kpt-7.pdf

It comprises the H4-2 tar road and the S28 dirt road, including the short S130 and S137 Duke
roads in between and it's a very productive area for Lions, Leopards and even Cheetah.

I have been there before but only around 2:00 PM, so the spots weren't very good.

IMO Croc Bridge camp is a very popular little camp and in a very productive area for finding the big cats, including Cheetah.
The S25 can also be a very good road especially in the early mornings.

Croc Bridge is one of my favorite little camps. The S28 produces regular cheetah sightings and there are numerous leopard sightings in the area. I once saw 5 leopards in the space of 2 hours traveling from Croc Bridge to Malelane Gate. (A mother with two cubs and a possible mating pair)
