Hi,

You can see one but not the other two live cams?

What browser are you using?

Also - can you confirm that Addo IS working and the other two arent?

Hi Everyone

Like Crested Val I also experience problems viewing the live cams. I have fast and reliable broadband and use Internet Explorer.

I can usually view the Addo live cam (which is great because I love to see the ellies and that giant tortoise!) but I am never able to view Satara and only get Orpen now and then. Deleting the cache and so on doesn’t help.

It has been like this with Satara since it came online. Sometimes I get Orpen but then seem to get pushed out and can never reconnect/restart no matter what I do. There have been a few occasions when I thought I was looking at Orpen live (the image was moving etc) but I was a bit suspicious when I thought I had seen the exact same thing twice and when I compared the live cam view I was seeing with what was on the still cams (and also posted on the highlights) it appeared that I was actually just looking at a “pre-recorded” loop, as the views simply weren’t the same. Sorry if that doesn’t make sense, I don’t know how else to explain it. The same thing also happened (just the once) when I thought I was looking at live images on the Satara live cam but on that occasion too I was simply viewing what had occurred in the past.

It is very disappointing. I do of course view the still cams but it would be marvellous if I could get Satara and Orpen live cams, sometimes at least. I often wonder if these problems occur simply because so many people are trying to view the cams.

Hi everyone!

I am doing my masters research at Nossob and I am from the University of the Witwatersrand. I am monitoring the images that are taken at Nossob on a daily bases and i receive the images at a 15 second interval. I was just wandering, where are the images stored? I am writing up my proposal and just need to find out how the images are stored, and what operating system is used? Do they get sent to a computer from the webcam?

Thanks,
Nicky

Hi nickymara,

We use live streaming capabilities on most of the cams, in the event that the live streaming is not supported we fallback to still images.

These images are fetched by our servers directly off the webcam and stored on our storage devices.

The technical questions you raised, the webcam operates on its own operating system, however the server that fetches and stores the images is linux based.

If you need further questions answered, please drop me a mail or reply here.

Thanks

Thank you so much for your reply. I really appreciate it.

What type of webcam is used to capture tees images? Also, is the webcam attached to a generator at the Nossob hide to power it?

Nicky

Hi Nicky

Until more info becomes available, you might find the info here of value to you :
Danie wrote:
Please note that the power supply to the camera is provided by the generator at Nossob and the generator is not running 24 hours a day. The webcam should be operating during the following hours:

* Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri : 05:00 - 23:00
* Wednesdays : 05:00 - 24:00
* Saturday : 05:00 - Sunday 23:00
* (weekends thus Saturday 05:00 - Sunday 23:00)

The camera will thus not operate outside the above hours.

This is really great! I really appreciate your help. Which year did the webcam become operational? Btw my co-supervisor is Dr. Dave Thompson. Do you know him? My supervisor is Prof. Stefan Grab from wits

I think Nossob cam became operational in December 2007.
Please also see Nossob Cam Highlights.

Sorry, I do not know either Dr. Dave Thompson or Prof. Stefan Grab, but I do wish you success with your research and with obtaining your masters :D

Hi Nickymara,

Do you want to monitor the activity of specific species or animals in general including birds. You will find that the animals are not always within the range of the webcam and not captured. Will you be interest in other images taken from the hide?

Hi Prwin,

Yes, I am monitoring animals (in particular mammals) water trough utilisation patterns. So it will be animals at the water trough only.

thanks

Hi Nicky

I will PM you the technical details and specs of the webcam. I see Matthys has already answered the generator question (Thanks Matthys!).

Hi,

With all due respect to the technical team working on the issue.

The Addo camera has been offline for many many days and weeks now. Could we get some sort of timeline as to when this will be resolved and rather drop the message until the repair is done - this must be a serious issue based on the time to resolve it.

Addo is surely the most "simple" setup, as it is just a few kilometers off the main road, has eskom power and telephone lines/signal (or network).

SANParks apologised to the forum community at the recent Cricket@Skukuza event, for the length of time it is taking to get the cam online again. They seem to think it was a lightening strike that caused the damage.
