Re: Am I alone in disliking the new zooming Orpen cam?

Unread postby Lionspoon » Sun Jul 18, 2010 8:47 am

Hi Jeff! :yaya:

I'm for the touring as well for the reasons stated above.

But why don't you check the daily threads to see what you might have missed at night? We have a pretty much 24/7 camming team by now and I'd like to think that we get most of the critters appearing on the cams framed by now.

Happy camming! :cam:

From one cam-addict to another... welcome Jeff! :yaya:
It's lovely to hear from you on the forum.

I think the touring / zooming has it's pro's and con's - just as does the old, non-zooming option. On the positive side, (as other cammers have just said) zooming lets us see the animals MUCH closer-up than before. It is great seeing the markings on those Wild Dogs, or what exactly those birds are doing in the water, or the tiny terrapin sunning itself on the side of the watering hole.

On the negative side - it can be quite exhausting watching the changing view on the cams. And I feel your pain as I too watch the cams out of the corner of my eye at work and find the zooming difficult in such circumstances. I also love the Youtube timelapse videos - so I hear you there too.

I guess it's one of those situations where some will like it and some won't... my stand is I think it's great that half the cams run with the zooming and the other half don't - that way it keeps everyone happy.

To this day it still amazes me that I can even watch a live stream of these watering holes... I know it's such a cliche - but isn't modern technology INCREDIBLE

Questions and comments about the cams

Unread postby Watusi » Sat Aug 28, 2010 5:25 pm

Hi everyone... I am new here so forgive me if I posted incorrectly. I do have a question though... How do you zoom in on the cams? Or is it done through a zoomie? Can one enlarge the cam? I am not having any luck... so I do not know if it is possible of I am just doing it wrong. Thanks for your answers. I am beginning to research various lodges/tours and plan to schedule a trip in the next 2 years or so.

Hi Watusi - Welcome to the cams and the addiction.

Unfortunately you cannot zoom the cams :( Orpen & Addo have a preprogrammed zoom every couple of shots and sometimes when Danie is off duty he zooms randomly for us.

I am sure the mods will add info here for you!

JJ is right, Watusi
Please see what Danie wrote :
I wish we could make the pan/tilt/zoom available to all our forum members but the data line to Satara is so 'thin', that even we, directly on the network, can not effectively do that. That is why I only now and then use it to check if all is still ok. When I give a command to the webcam, it takes about 10-20 seconds to respond as the data line's capacity is limited and actually used for Satara restcamp operational tasks (e-mail, booking our guests in/out, etc.) and we give preference on our network to that! (unfortunately the telecom service provider can not give us more bandwidth! :( )

Warm welcome to the forums ! :D

Great sightings tonight ! 8)
Thanks, Cammers !

nossob waterhole

Unread postby nicholaslw58 » Thu Sep 09, 2010 1:13 pm

Has the nossob water hole had some cosmetic work done on it, the sides seem to be more 'user friendly' and sloping

Hi Nicholas - Looks like it, there is a zoomed picture on the Nossob daily thread today and you can see it more clearly :D

Hi all, I was just wondering where the cam at Addo is? Is it at the waterhole at the main camp or elsewhere in the park? We'll be there for the long weekend and given all the activity over the last few days I want to know where to be!!

Thank you!

(I also just found the Addo Webcam thread...suppose I could have searched for that one first!)

How many different waterholes on Addo cam?

Unread postby Trish van Zyl » Wed Sep 29, 2010 1:40 pm

I am a bit confused about how many different waterholes the webcam monitors. After months of watching and not seeing anything at all, I decided Addo was a bit over rated but must admit in the last few weeks have been rewarded - so there really are elephants in Addo. :D

Hi Trish :yaya:

I'm sure it's just the one big waterhole, and the cam spans across it (as it is impossible to fit all the water in the same picture).

I haven't been to Addo for many years, so honestly can't remember if I've got this right. No doubt a lovely cammer will correct me if I'm wrong 8)

Hi Trish and Mel,

it's just one waterhole - we were in addo last year and it's the waterhole you can watch from the hide and the bungalow. It just seems to be big at the cams - but if you watch it live it's much smaller :D

Hi Danie!

It looks as if you programmed Nossob cam to zoom in during the dark hours. Is that correct? And if so, would it be possible to maybe prolong this a bit in the morning hours, let's say till 6 - 6.30 am until it's full light?

Hi Danie :D
I concur with Lionspoon  I think it would be great if Nossob was zoomed in a wee bit more so we can see the animals better 8) 8)
