Hi and welcome to posting @cams, Robj.

Please read here :
Danie wrote:We have received some bad news around Addo Webcam from the technician who was at the site  .

It looks like the webcam at Addo has been damaged as it does not even switch on. It is difficult to assess what the problem is and the webcam is on its way to be evaluated and tested as all basic tests on site pointed to the webcam itself.

We'll keep you up to date with the progress as there might be involvement from our insurance company as well.

Thanks for your patience! Keep on camming as the webcams at Satara, Orpen and Nossob are still alive and well! :)

Addo Camera (turnaround time)

Unread postby Olonana » Wed May 07, 2014 10:01 am

Hi,

With all due respect to the technical team working on the issue.

The Addo camera has been offline for many many days and weeks now. Could we get some sort of timeline as to when this will be resolved and rather drop the message until the repair is done - this must be a serious issue based on the time to resolve it.

Addo is surely the most "simple" setup, as it is just a few kilometers off the main road, has eskom power and telephone lines/signal (or network).

SANParks apologised to the forum community at the recent Cricket@Skukuza event, for the length of time it is taking to get the cam online again. They seem to think it was a lightening strike that caused the damage.

Woeful webcams

Unread postby wildlove » Thu Jun 12, 2014 7:04 am

The different webcams have been down most of the time for weeks now. This gives a terrible "picture" regarding the capability of Sanparks to the world out there.

Should this webcam project not be handed over to the honorary rangers? They still seem to be rather capable.

These Webcams are out there in the middle of the bush, sometimes it's a Telekom fault, sometimes it's an animal who breaks them, it's not always so easy to fix them
Parts for them sometimes have to be transported for hundreds of km then when they get there don't work
I'm sure Sanparks are trying there best to get them repaired
We must just be patient

Welcome to the forum Wildlove! :yaya:

Like Carol said, these cams are out in the sticks and the problems are usually not within SANParks' control. There is also no power at Nossob and the whole camp is powered by a generator so that brings a whole lot of problems of its own!

The SANParks officials do a wonderful job in maintaining our cams. If they can sort out a problem they do so ASAP. They've even gone out immediately to clean the lens and such for us.

Please stick around and enjoy the cams that are working and know that they are doing all the can to get the others up and running as soon as they can. :)

A warm welcome to you, wildlove. :gflower:

The webcams have always been a main attraction.

Don't worry, this was the start nine years ago.

I understand your frustration, but Sanparks is doing just ok

Hi wildlove

I agree with all the above posts. I know for a fact a lot of effort is put in by the SANParks team to bring those pictures to us to enjoy.

I am going to invite SANParks (Nedret) to explain a bit of the background, and the economics to you. And while I agree the HRs are capable, I am hoping you are going to withdraw your comment about SANParks' capability now that you understand a bit more of what actually goes on behind the scenes :D

Dear wildlove,

Reading posts like yours makes us feel excited and embarrassed all at the same time.

Excited, because we can sense your passion for the webcams, and nothing gives us more joy than providing a healthy addiction like the webcams to hopefully help "teleport" you to the parks in no time.

Embarrassed because with regard to the Addo webcam, sadly we have been real slow with our supply chain processes.

The old webcam was hit by lightning and the challenge was to procure an outdoor webcam with very specific requirements. It turned out this equipment will need to be imported for us, and the ETA we have been given is only the end of June.

Raychi called the Nossob camp earlier and they promised to send someone to go and restart it. Let's give them a chance to do so.

In the mean time, please don’t give up on the webcams. We are doing what we can.

Hi SANParks team, maybe it would be helpful to change the messaging on cams that are down for a longer term of time (power is out and will be out, equipment needs to be changed) as opposed to short-term hiccups where we should check back soon? Just a suggestion.

I hope we are getting closer to having the cam back. I miss seeing the elephants. They are seen so rarely at the other water holes.
