Sadly it seems that our brave Coucal did not survive the cold wet weather that we had lately. She was last seen before the long weekend, more than a week ago!! :(

@ Morkel 777 - most of the birds in our garden loves grated cheese, especially the robins and the wagtails.

Don't be hasty naomi, they don't call it the rain bird for nothing.

This photo was taken on the S25 at the beginning of June. He remained still long enough for me to take a couple of clicks.

Photographed recently near Nsemeni Dam in the late afternoon sun.

A truly beautiful bird.

There have always been Coucals in our garden and on more than one occasion there were chicks. The sad thing is I have never seen one grow to adulthood. This year again there were chicks - I even managed a couple of photographs -

Unfortunately my dogs got hold of one of them and the other one just disappeared. They leave the nest long before they are able to fly properly and are therefor easy prey.

This one had me confused (not difficult as I am a complete imbecile when it comes to birds).

Anyhow, came across this Coucal during a visit to a Private Reserve some 25km west of Bela Bela (Warmbaths) this weekend. According my book (Sasols) the Burchell's was the only Coucal we were likely to see, but in the book and on pictures found on the net it misses the white stripe above the eye. Looking here I see on a few of the pictures there is also a hint of the white stripe (e.g. Jans last pic) although not that distinct.

Anyone able to confirm that what we saw was indeed 'just' the Burchell's Coucal :?

Said nothing, didn't move, couldn't get a different angle due bushes....

All the best, Michael

Hi Michael,

I cannot see your photo but it sounds like an immature Burchell's, yes.

A google search of immature Burchell's gave some results that fit my sighting a 100%, so thanks a lot wildtuinman!!
