Yip, Red-Crested, male. The female is duller.

The lack of white cheek is the easiest way to distinguish it from male Black-Bellied Bustard. The female Black-Bellied Bustard does not have a black belly.

Have seen a few of these on the Transport dam road last week ( and one killed on the Pretoriuskop - Skukuza road - by a car)

Love to watch the beak snapping first and then listen to their call!

A male seen on the S93 road between Olifants and Letaba. He was calling (I assume for a mate), and was so loud we had to pull our windows up. But it was an awesome sound to hear :)

We were quite excited to see this one in September, somewhere near Letaba. Difficult to photograph with all the bobbing to and fro!

Excellent pic. Showing perfectly why it is called Red-crested.

Very rare indeed! I've been birding for many years and never seen the red crest. They only show them while displaying. Lucky you!!

Thanks Lizet. Yes it was! So glad I was able to get a record of it. I had no idea it was SO rare to see this, so we were very lucky indeed! :D
