I have the Sassol Bird ap for my Ipad and am wondering how it compares to the Roberts and Newmans -does anyone know if they differ much? Is it worthwhile to have more than one birding ap? :thanx:

I have the Roberts app. Even though it is more expensive, I decided to get it instead of the Sasol app, mainly because of the photos it contains. As I suspected, the photos are incredibly helpful, especially for the more difficult LBJ's. It also contains photos of birds in non-breeding plumage, juveniles and females, that have been very helpful in the past. I've never used the Sasol app, but I know I wouldn't want to not have the photos available...

I have the Sasol because it was a heck of a lot cheaper. But seems that it doesnt have all the birds? Cant find Ground Hornbill. And there is only one guinea fowl listed. I'm sure there are more than that.

My Sasol has both. Did you try typing (under search) Southern Ground Hornbill and Helmeted Guinea Fowl?
Sasol does need the new bird names when you search :naughty:

Ja! I type in "southern g" and the list appears containing only one bird and it is a southern gery headed sparrow. And as for guinea fowl the only one I have is helmeted guinea fowl.

That is odd -mine shows them all. Do you perhaps have the Sassol Light version which is free? If not go to your home page of Sasol and there is a contact us box where you can email them for help. The other thing I did do was update my version on ITunes where you can check for updates but I never had a problem with missing birds

Chalk 'n Cheese IMO...

Sasol is far better than nothing and Roberts is far better than Sasol.

Put the two side by side and you'll never open the Sasol again, except to congratulate yourself on buying the other...

Thanks Pamelajane. I did that and just got a reply. A lady called Dianne said for me to change my location to "all". I did that and voila! All good.

Thanks.

Ja I've had a look at the Roberts. In my estimation the value add doesnt equal the additional $. And it is quite a bit of $. So I reckon you can get by with the Sasol quite fine once you know your way around it. Then you can google everything and get a heck of a lot more than the Roberts is gonna give you anyway. I mean you've got it all there on the tablet. And how comprehensive does the actual workbook/fieldguide need to be?

Try finding internet reception in the Kgalagadi  But you are probably correct as we do take Newmans,Roberts, etc bird books with us and I do like the COMPARE facility on Sasol ap so I guess I could (should) save myself a lot of money and stick to what I already have  I haven't tried using Roberts so can't comment on how useful it would be for me but in my experience when I'm struggling to ID a bird the more pics I have the better -esp juvenile, non-breeding,etc.

I'd convinced myself of the same money saving mantra just prior to a visit to the Karoo NP, but I was given the opportunity to use both apps side by side and there is no looking back. :wall:

Compare Facility: Far better in Roberts
Bird Illustrations: Sketches in Sasol / Sketches and several photos in Roberts

You know those two wonderful expressions:

1. Goedkoop is duurkoop. and

2. Penny wise, pound foolish?

Well, they were invented for just this situation.

Certainly if you are destitute, don't get the Roberts. However, most of us, whilst feeling the economic pinch, can still maak 'n plan if necessary. It is necessary.

This is, of course, very subjective. Go out and compare them yourself, (and thank me later...)

I also bought Sasol before Roberts was avialable and never open it. Sasol is expensive at the price and Roberts cheap at the price.
