What are the most common bird calls heard in Kruger ?

Unread postby micmic » Thu Oct 10, 2013 9:56 pm

I've been working on identifying bird calls and I wonder what would be the top-20 or top-30 of the most common calls one can hear in Kruger. I suppose several doves, hornbills, plovers, ibises, fish eagle etc, but I'd appreciate a list from the bird experts here.

I am speaking/writing under correction but when staying in a camp and very early some mornings I always hear "laughing sounds" coming from big trees and I think that they are "babblers". It sounds like there are lots of them and they all "laugh" at the same time.

:hmz: I would say the wake-up call from the francolins and the doves.

Also crested barbet, red-winged starlings and glossy starlings  Depending on the time of year, woodland kingfishers too :)

Not an easy one because it would be different calls in the various area's of Kruger, but if I had to guess on my experiences I would say Crested Francolin, Swainson's Francolin, Helmeted Guineafowl, Grey-Go-Away Bird, Black Backed Puffback, Long Billed Crombec, Dark Capped Bulbul, Glossy Starling, Yellow Billed and Red Billed Hornbill, Crested Barbet, Chinspot Batis, Southern Black Tit, White Bellied Sunbird, Blue Waxbill, Cape White Eye and Orange Breasted Bush-Shrike.

You have a very good chance of hearing all these birds through out Kruger on any day of the year.

African Fish-Eagles only really call during mating season which starts from about April -August/September. After that they tend to be rather quiet.

In summer it is another ball game all together because then you can add Woodlands Kingfisher, Red Chested Cuckoo, Jacobin and Leveilants Cuckoo, various warblers, weavers such as Village Weavers etc

You are speaking for people with good ears... These birds will have to sit on my shoulder and sing away at full volume if I am going to hear them...

Can't wait to hear the Woodland Kingfisher.
As we usually go to KNP in the summer months, that is the sound I identify with for the park!!

I also love the mournful song of the Emerald Spotted Wood Dove.
The bird doesn't sing because it has answers, it sings because it has a song.

I would include the green pigeon - at least in Pretoriuskop.

I think it's got to be Rattling Cisticola. They call from every second bush! In summer Woodland Kingfisher is also very conspicuous.
