Hi, could I please have clarification on the ID of this little bird which I think could be a Female Red-back Shrike.
Seen in Kruger last month.

Please could you experts shed some light on the ID of this little chap or chapette!
Seen in Kruger in Mar this year.

Initial thoughts are of Red-Backed Shrike........But i'll look again with some references for you!

Rusty, you're being overly cautious. It definitely is a juvenile Red-backed Shrike. I'm assuming you still want to definitively rule out juvenile Lesser Grey Shrike?

The reddish brown mantle, buffy margins of the primaries and absence of a white patch at the base of the primaries rule out Lesser Grey.

It took some time to ID this bird. I got a lot of feedback from my fellow forum members in the ID parade, and have made a final ID as a "Red-backed Shrike". :dance:
