On my way to Marakele (29/01/2005) I photographed a white stork with a ring on its left leg. It is fairly broad and situated just above the knee. Does any of our expert birders know about this ringing? As storks are migratory birds, this could have been done somewhere in the world(Europe?).

Ciconia ciconia, indeed this could have been done in Europe. There are 9 of them living within 1 km from me.

They haven't migrated south though, the winter is too warm (app 6 degreegs here at the moment, in stead of ~0 C)

Erwin,

Most rings contains a specific number which will indicate the country in which the bird was ringed, who ringed it and numbers that would link the bird to a database. Sometimes rings are colour coded for specific things. I do not think that whitout a number it will be possible to give all the answers.

I would suggest emailing this request and photo to Callan Cohen of Bird Life South Africa and maybe he can suggest a possible plan of action: callan@birdingafrica.com

I managed to get a closer look at the ring - though no id marks visible. Next time I'll use the 800mm

What's interesting is that the leg (femur) on the ring's side is much thicker than the other. And it also looks as if the ring fits quite tight. I'm sure this will hamper growth or interfere with tendon movement within the leg.

I saw one of these guys today on the way to Suikerbosrand in a peice of burnt veld.

This is very weird! They are only supposed to arrive in October :hmz:

Oh well...A great sighting all in all and a new lifer for me

During our trip in December, we saw hundreds of white storks near Mopani. It was just amazing to see so many safely arrived in SA. :lol:

I watched three separate flocks of white storks soaring high and circling on the thermals heading north.

There must have been 40-50 birds per flock!
