Bird spot in Addo in Main game area, on my way to Carol's rest - I.E. Thicket.
Two weeks ago - early winter.

Bigger than a sparrow, but less than a starling. What I saw of it was a black body with lime greem dashes on the legth of its body (READ - wings too?). No time for a photo, and he took off and went into a dense bush.

Any Ideas ? The green and black were as striking (vivid) as the markings on a woodpecker for example. Very distinctive.

Anybody ??? Heeeeeeeeeeelp!!!

:rtm: <-------Ja, Im going to buy Robertson's Birds....

Sorry Louis, but I do not understand the question. You did not get a pic of the bird and then.... ?

Do you think the pic that you posted might be your bird or.....?

The posted photo is of a European Starling, Common Starling or just Starling (Sturnus vulgaris), or Spreeuw in Dutch.

It has been introduced in South Africa, so could indeed be the bird Nicky means.

That's why I asked, but I did not know it had been introduced in SA. Didn't they have enough birds, did they have to steel ours too

European starling is VERY common in the Eastern Cape so as louis said, this could be the bird nickyG saw

Good afternoon to all

Yesterday evening I photographed this bird on a farm 10km north of Paarl in a dead tree. It was solitary. Size: starling size. It merely perched a bit, and did no feeding or any remarkable behaviour. Looking through Roberts leads me to a tentative ID of juvenile Wattled Starling but I have never seen a Wattled Starling in the area before though it is well within range. Roberts states the juvenile bill is initially yellow and this is certainly not yellow. The overall colour seems rather dark. Some help please? I have put in three photos to show all the angles!

Many thanks
Pete

Hi Dabchick and Lizet

Now I am really embarrassed! Why didn't European Starling occur to me! They occur there by the thousands (indeed are a pest on the farm). Again I did not look widely enough in Roberts and got stuck on a few features becasue it looked like a Wattled Starling I saw in KNP.

Thanks for the help!
From a red-faced Pete

Pete, don't worry about it,

I feel your pain.

Last week I did the same thing. Saw a bird on the beach here that I thought was a really awesome lifer. I took about 170 photos of it, hoping for a good one. I checked though all of my bird books and still couldn't figure it out.

:wall: Juv Common Starling. Fail.

Please tell my wife whose pics these are that the bird on the left is not a juvenile common starling...

From our garden in Cape Town.
