This morning I went to see the first ever African record of a Black Skimmer at Rietvlei in Tableview.

I got the heads up from Trevor last night and arrived at 6, to see the skimmer flying around for an hour before I had to leave to pay the bills.

I have seen stationary African skimmers in Okavango, but was treated to this one 'fishing'.

Magnificent!

Fantastic BB! SO and I popped in later this morning and saw the bird - mostly sleeping but we were also treated to a quick flight!

More chance of seeing a Black skimmer in WP than a Currie cup or super 15 cup.

At least before yesterday I knew there WAS a Currie Cup or Super 15 one, Bob.

Thanks all. I am chuffed with that pic, taken with a 'one-piece' camera. The other dozen or so are up to my usual standard - and the bird was further away.

Hugh. If you know where SANCCOB is, you travel past it from Blaauberg Road and turn right at the 4 way stop. Then into Table Bay Reserve. Take the road to the end and park at the boom, and then you have to walk along to the old hide. That is where I took the shot. In my defence, I found out about it at about 22h00 last night, and AFAIR you are no night owl.
