I have always found South African birds interesting and attractive, but I have never really learnt mucg about them - and I can only name a dozen or so.. After our recent trip to KNP, I am interested in learning a little more (on this forum for example). I think it might also be nice if we were to supplement our Kruger trip in August 2013 by visiting additional areas rich in bird-life.

I was thinking perhaps Magoebaskloof, either before or after a Kruger visit? As I understand it there is a lot more rain in this area than areas to the west (like Polokwane), and even in dry August, the green almost rain-forest like reserves attract a wide variety of birds? I also notice that there are a couple of birding specialists who offer guided walks with birds as the focal point and topic of interest? This would perhaps supplement our Kruger experience, where the walks cover a wider range of things etc. What do you think? Have any of you had a good time in Magoebaskloof, including from a birding point of view?

As far as Magoebaskloof goes, you cannot go wrong. Probably one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa that you will ever see and a real gem in regards to birding.

I was there about two weeks ago and had some stunning views of birds such as Bat Hawk, Narina Trogon, Knysna Turaco to name a few.

I would absolutely suggest that you go for a guided walk through the forest with a guide such as David who works from Kurisa Moya. If you want more details on this, you are welcome to either google them or send me a PM and I will help you with more information.

Forest birding is not easy I might add, but very rewarding!
