I wonder if you can help me identify this eagle. It was at Pretoriuskop and he was too far away to take a picture. He is really scary looking.

Pretty sacry, indeed. :) Looks like an immature Bateleur, wildheart. Notice it lacks a (proper) tail, has unfeathered legs and it doesn't have feathers between its bill and eyes (enhancing its scary look).

Thank you so much! Now that I look in my book it definitely looks like an immature Bateleur, I never would have got that right.

He is really something from a horror movie.

I have seen this Bateleur. I would say it is a sub-adult bateleur, as it still has it's juvenile plumage, but already has the adult-coloured beak. This is the first time ever I've seen this. The photo's are unfortunately not great, it was overcasted and drizzling.

I think this is also a sub-adult Bataleur seen in Kruger in Feb.

The short tail, long wing projection, head shape etc etc....Lead to Juv. Bateleur(Possible adult, but cant see much colouration).

Is this a juvenile Bateleur?- seen at Gesantfombi dam on the H-2 near Crocodile bridge on 23 May

Same bird. Can anyone comment on the Milky eye? What can have caused this? Is it a birth defect or an injury? The bird seemed in good condition.
