Those small brown birds so many of us battle to identify, affectionately named Little Brown Jobs or LBJs for short by birders, can really be a pain especially if you want to increase the bird sightings list of your last trip.

Use this area to post photos of those LBJs you find difficult to identify and maybe some of the forum members might be able to be of assistance.

Remember only LBJs here. If you need a raptor identified go here and for all other birds you can go here.

Fair chance I'm wrong, but I think its a Spotted Flycatcher. (Am working off the Sasol on my smartphone).

Help! Please!

Another flycatcher/familiar chat help needed please.

Thanks Josh for pointing me here.

Micetta, I think the bar on the tail is the sunlight. I am going to look for more pics of this bird to post here.

I’m not sure about that bar on the tail…but with white eyebrow, light streaking on breast, no steaks on head…my guess is Dusky Flycatcher

I hope it's the sunlight, because that bar makes me

If the bar is the sun  Then dusky sounds good to me with all the knowledge of a duckling

DB, are you sure that the last pic is the same bird? No stripes and white eyebrow to be seen :hmz:

The first bird in question is an African Dusky Flycatcher - quite small, and quite active. The Spotted Flycatchers will probably all have left us by now. (Or a few weeks back when this was taken)

Have a look at the graph from SABAP2 on the bottom of this page:

http://sabap2.adu.org.za/species_maps.php?Spp=654

That last bird does not appear to be the same bird. It looks like a Familiar Chat?

Cheers

Niall.

Oh dear, I did get confused it seems! There was definitely a familiar chat in the area when I was taking these pics.

Thank you all you helpful folk here - as a 'newbie' birder, your help goes a long way to encourage and teach one!

Edit: Lesson ONE; look more closely at your bird pics .... rather obvious to me now they are different birds  :D

Hi Ice,

Southern Grey-headed Sparrow.

Grey Head, russet back, paler wing panel and white bar on wing with paler underparts.
