I've looked in my old book- Sinclair 1988
Looked at photos on the forum
and have decided my photo is of Pririt Batis??? They were a pair, I assume male and female, slightly different from one another. Photo taken at Lower Sabi from one of the fantastic river front tents.
The problem I have is according to my book this bird is not found here.
Is it what I think?
thanks for any help...
Having problems attaching photo
jacquie

Hi Jacquie,

as you already concluded: Pririt Batis does not occur in Kruger. Cape Batis do occur in Kruger in Winter, but is very scarce and only in certain localities such as Pretoriuskop and along the Sabie river which they would use as a channel to move through.

The common Batis in Kruger is Chinspot.

Compare you photos here with mine and see what you think:

Thanks wildtuinman
I think it is Chinspot, I'd already found your photo of Pririt... to me they look the same!!!! that was why I thought Pririt to start with.
In my book the colour for chinspot was a rusty colour on chest
I am still trying to get my photo here, perhaps if I manage you will be able to confirm
Once again thanks for the help

A TR is a Trip Report that are written by forumites, reporting back on their trips to various SANParks. Although I wrote those instructions to help with Trip Reports, they can be used anywhere on the forum. The bit you need is:

Quote:
4. To share your photo:
* Click on the photo to open it.
* Click on the button labelled Share.
* Click the line "Grab the HTML/BBCode"
* Select Medium 640 and the BBCode option

The code you need is displayed in the box. Clicking in it will highlight the code so copy it then paste it into your post.

I've just changed the "TR" to "post".

Please let me know if I can help further.

There can be great confusion between the male Pririt and male Chinspot. The main difference to look for is the flanks of the males. Pririt has grey speckles on the flanks where Chinspot has none.

The females of the species are unmistakable.

You have a very interesting bird here, Jacquie!

I also found two incidental records for Pririt Batis in Kruger.

http://sabap2.adu.org.za/spp_summary.php?Spp=674

Are the flanks speckled? I think your bird needs further investigation.

I don't think that the flanks are speckled as it should be in Pririt Batis.

If you look at my photos of the male Chinspot you will also notice some grey marks under the wing which I think is more present in your bird than grey speckles on the flanks.

I'd go with male Chinspot Batis.

Thanks for your help
I may now annoy people on the forum by checking on the other Kruger birds we're not sure about
