At first I thought that this was a cattle egret, but then I noticed that the legs and feet are black, so now I'm not sure what it might be :hmz: I think that a juvenile cattle egret would also have a black/dark bill ... perhaps this is a 'transitional' stage? Seen in Darling in early January 2015.

I think it is a non-breeding adult Cattle Egret Arks. They have black legs and feet.

Interesting, Hilda, since both my field guides (Roberts, Newman) show the nonbreeding cattle egret with pale yellow legs ...... :hmz: And while the juvenile does have black legs and feet, it also has a black bill. Still, it makes sense that it should be some form of cattle egret, since there were masses of them roosting in the trees ovehanging the dam.

Roberts' Multimedia Birds of Southern Africa has a picture of the non-breeding adult Cattle Egret almost exactly the same as your picture Arks, that's why I am almost sure. But let's wait for some of our real experts to ID this beautiful bird for you! I'm just a novice, trying my best. :D

Sasol, 3rd edition page 63 clearly shows the immature cattle egret with black legs and yellow beak.
