Hi Heksie. :gflower:

I'm no Birder (wish i was)...As far as I can make out, the Scarlet Chested Sunbird or juvenile are "red" chested. To me it look more like a Juvenile Marico Sunbird. Might be wrong.

Neither am I Philip1, but the red chest applies to the male Scarlet-chested Sunbird - juvenile and adults, whilst the female has a dark chest, again female adult and juvenile. The male juvenile Marico Sunbird has a clear eyebrow, which I cannot see on this little bird. On the other hand, maybe one just cannot see it on this picture. I'm waiting for one of the experts to make a call on this birdie!

I would also go for a Marico Sunbird Juvenile. The underparts are Yellowish :hmz:

Wow, I learned a lot here. After looking at countless photos I realized how poorly these immatures are described. It could very well be a Marico Sunbird!

I am also looking forward to see what the experts have to say about this one.

This was taken in January this year at Lubye Lubye bridge in Kruger National Park. Hope this narrows it down.

The KNP location certainly brings Marico sunbird into play, Heksie.

Ladybirder would be seeing these young'uns at her local patch often enough to know it well. I took that as a pointer and, similarly to WTM's search for and scrutiny of countless pix, I agree with him that the Marico sunbird call is a good one.

Knowing what the adult male looks like, and seeing the juvenile image, I think a series showing transition into adulthood would be fascinating!

It certainly would be fascinating Johan, but I suppose it is easier said than done? :hmz:

I suppose Ladybirder would be able to spoil us with a series of pictures to show the transition into adulthood?

Do not "suppose" so much, hilda. For such a project one would have to set up as if it was a research venture. The transition will take place over a period of three or four months…

It would help to know where the road was.
