I must be going color blind :) But that looks very yellow to me :)

The only possible bird then can be a Southern Red Bishop, but the color is putting me way off?

Google red bishop images, and you will see what Johan is talking about. The "red" in the photographs ranges widely from pale orange to bright red.

Thank you Adrian!

Bird 2, the one with the orange breast behind the grey headed sparrow, and then behind the cape sparrows in the other picture is a bit of a mystery?? I know the sparrow family dust bathes a lot, and this can affect the colour of the breast, but I'm not sure a bird can find that much bright orange sand to bathe in. If it is just an orange dust bath phenomena, then I'd say it is another grey headed sparrow. The grey headed sparrows shown have a yellowish, rather than horn colour bill which is indicative of non-breeding winter colours and is not often shown in the bird-guides

That indeed is the bird I'm talking about, I still find it a strange bird, but think it's another grey headed, like you said as well. It might very well be possible that the orange color on the chest is caused by dustbath indeed. I think the same goes for the first sparrow, the color on that bird might be caused by dust as well. I make this a grey headed until someone comes with a better option

Thank you again Adrian, that goes for all the birds at the end a presume?

Thank you for all the help so far, that's a couple of more days sorted out. But there's still a lot more to come

Regards Maurice

Hello,

I found this owl in Addo on June 5 just after Matyholweni camp. From the orange eyes it looks to me to be a Cape Eagle Owl, can anyone confirm ? I am not sure what other differences to look for with the Spotted Eagle Owl. I saw him in the day, around 10 am. My partner thought I was nutz when I said to turn the car around there was an owl, but there he was. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately it is a Spotted eagle owl :(

The spotty has fine barring on the chest with light blotches, whereas the the cape eagle owl has dark blotches on the chest. The eye colour can be confusing as some spotties (like your bird) have orange eyes, in particular the juveniles.

This is a really bad photos as the bird was too far away for our lenses and it is heavily cropped, but for ID purposes, can anyone identify it? I thought it might be a Grey-headed Gull? We saw it at Mestel Dam near Pretoriuskop early in June.

Starting to work my way thru my photos from my April visit to Marakele, Mapungubwe and Kruger. This bird was seen at Marakele and I'm wondering whether it might be a lemonbreasted canary?
