The BB

This bird gave everyone problems

It is a Juvenile LesserBlackbacked Gull
The legs are flesh-coloured as well as less robust bill
Johan thought that this bird might just be a feather to far for a duckling challenge.

Then the rest

2) A Swift Tern and a Lesser Crested Tern

3 ) Lesser Moorhen

4) Squacco Heron

6) Ruddy Turnstone

7) Bar Tailed Godwit

8 ) White Backed Night Heron

9 ) Juvenile African Jacana

and the promised LBJ

That BB of # 9 was a nightmare Sky!

My results for Sky # 10: 9/10 (at least the family of the incorrect one was right) and the BB was also right.

Hmmm! I thought the birding school for ducklings was supposed to be the easier challenge! I didn't even get one correct.

I shall have to go to a birding school for pre-ducklings if I'm to improve my birding ID during my next visit!

Hi umtali! I have to agree with you, that this one was not quite a "duckling" challenge.

Seeing that there are some newcomers, maybe it would be the case to make it easier, as it used to be and those of us who are a bit ahead can do the "BIRD ID Challenge".

Personally I am a grown duckling, though still a duckling  and I found a few very tough this time, actually I am still battling with one of the darn LBJs (little brown jobs)

Thank you Micetta.

It is very discouraging to find you can't identify any birds in the 'easier' challenge.

For me it is a chance to have some knowledge before visiting the park. There is such a diversity of birds out there to be identified. They don't hang around for you to find them in the bird books!

Hi Umtali,

Don't despair! Just keep on trying! Next time you will do much better, and might even score 100%! Also read the descriptions of the birds in your bird guide(s), because sometimes you find something in there that you may have overlooked by just looking at the picture. Some of these birds look so the same, it is not easy to differentiate, unless you have lots and lots of experience. That's the only way to learn anyway! Just keep on trying.

That's right Micetta! My problem was # 8 too! Although my books show the "under tail", even that didn't help me! But I am very satisfied with my score!

@ Sky: You are a STAR! Thank you so much for starting a Pre-Ducklings' challenge! You are a real gentleman! I hope Umtali (and maybe many more other "stiffnecks to be" sees that!

From a pre-duckling.......

Thanks Sky. Can't wait for the next one when you have time.

hope I got them all right.

Much easier when viewed from 10 metres from screen with binoculars. to ensure to ensure correct stiff-neck pose.

quack quack.
